Are Kids Missing Out On Saturday Morning Cartoons

Frankly, I don't think a lot of the 90s cartoons people often praise are all that great. Either TTA or Animaniacs! are that funny to me. Doug was pretty boring in retrospect, and Pepper Ann was decent, but surely not one of the best I've ever seen.

Doug? Have you SEEN Doug lately? (the Nick episodes)

Yes, it was about as charming and innocent as a cartoon could get but IMO it doesn't hold up at all. It's not funny.

In all fairness, that is just your opinion, and what day or night of the week a cartoon airs does not determine it's quality. Not in the least.

Now that I've got your attention.

Not every child in America has cable/satellite, nor a VHS/DVD, nor a computer with broadband internet, nor video games. All they have is either PBS or broadcast channels that broadcast either repeats from the 90's to be compliant with the Children's Television Act,repurposing programs from cable television (ABC Kids),or programs for pre-schooler (and there's of course CWKids.)

And please do not make me mention the results of realizing that when these same kids reach 13, they will feel too old for these cartoons.

I only started watching it in 07. I'd seen a Disney ep before back in 2000 whilst on holiday in America and i had remembered it well enough to find out about the series and so i began watching the Nick version, which is pretty good imo. Well i don't think it's meant to be funny. It isn't a comedy, it;s a normal cartoon about a normal person.

Yes and No is the answer to your question. Saturday mornings are still there and Nickolodeon, Cartoon Network and DisneyXD are putting their past foot forward although most of the shows are reruns of stuff that premired earlier in the week, but the again in the golden age a lot of cartoons only ran one season but were air with various line ups.

The thing that kids might be missing is that experience of just one day a week that made Saturday Morning special, you go through school all week looking forward to seeing your favorite heroes in action and then you sit down infront of the TV in your pajams and with your cereal and just chill out and enjoy the action.

Saturday mornings aren't dead, the networks might have abandoned them, but the spirit of what made them so special will never die.

I agree with you about the videos and video games, but according to this world almanac that I have in my hand, 1987 is the first year where cable reached 50% of all homes. I read somewhere that today 90% of households have satellite or cable. That is quite a difference. Also back in 1987, Nick was like the only channel the kids would watch. CN didn't exsist and Disney was premium.

Yep, cartoons would be on until 5pm in the evening at the latest. On Saturdays the cartoons were pretty much over by 11, and then you went out to play with your friends.

Even so, you must have the internet (you wouldn't be able to post here if you didn't), so you can still see episodes legally on the channel's/network's websites. If you're a kid without cable, you're still not missing out entirely.

As far as I'm concern, hardly anyone seems motivated to do much on Saturday as we speak. This whole weekly ritual we all partaken in has since became dead as the drive-in. It just isn't the same now.

Probably. My folks though had cable since the 70's! Interesting it had taken a long time for the rest of the country to get hooked up (legitimately of course)!

I think kids ARE missing out on Saturday morning cartoons. Back in the day, Saturday cartoons were as important as Friday night cartoons. Although Cartoonetwork/Nick/Disney competes with each other, I feel as though there is less competition between channels. Back in the 90's, there were Fox Kids/Cartoonetwork/Nick/KidsWb/UPN13/etc... to choose from. Also, I remembered as a kid struggling to decide what channels to watch afterschool, but now i find that the only cartoons played afterschool are found only in CN or NIck. Although many people argue kids these days have videogames or the internet that replaces saturday morning cartoons, I feel that since the Saturday Morning was presented as an event with new episodes and such, i could not miss it and would play videogames or watch video online some other time. Back when i was a kid, i would always be excited to wake up really early to watch my favorite shows. It's a shame kids these days don't have to wake up early and can tivo, watch it online, whatever. haha Kids have it soo good that it takes away the fun from it.
