Are home theater systesm with 1000 watts louder than stereo recievers with 400W?

I have been looking for a good system to play loud music on, I do not know a whole lot about audio, I have noticed that most home theater systems home with more wattage than stereos, so I was wondering if home theater systems would be louder or better sound quality than buying a stereo. If i buy a reciever I would still like to hook up about 4 speakers to it. any help would be great
