Are they active as in do they swim around a lot and stuff or just stay in one place. And would a 10 Gal tank be suitable for housing 5 or 6 guppies?

Yes they are very active fish. 5-6 males would do well in a 10g, provided that 10g was fully filtered, heated and had been through the nitrogen cycle.
10g is too small to mix both males and females, you'd end up with baby guppies coming out of your ears. While the first spawn may be cute and fun, by the 30th spawn and hundreds of unrehomable babies you may be pretty sick of guppies! So stick to males, they're the most colourful anyway.

The thing with guppies prolific breeders, lots of babies ok if yo get all male or all female but even then the females could be pregnant and the adults have a habit of dying.
They were quite a hardy fish they do not seem as they were 20 years ago I had much success with them but now my water does not suit them, you need to talk to your local pet store, and if you are thinking of breeding them you will need a larger tank. I would go with white cloud minnows tropical ones more colourful) the male is like a little shark darting about chasing the females or even danioes.

Guppies are pretty (plus there are different colors too that can be interesting and fun). Good fish for beginners. They swim around a lot but usually from about the middle and up- not toward the bottom too much. 10 gal. is good for no more than about 8 guppies if they are all one sex- otherwise babies galore and you will soon overcrowd your tank. Livebearing species like guppies do best with aquarium salt in their water- 1 teaspoon per gallon of water. I would also suggest maybe 5-6 guppies along with a few ghost shrimp- they will eat the food that the guppies miss that falls to the bottom. They are fun to watch too.
