Are cops allowed to tip off drug dealers as long as the cop isn't part of the

investigation? WORCESTER (AP) -- A Worcester police officer has been convicted of drug charges for tipping off a marijuana dealer to the possibility of police near his work place.

Officer Carlos Burgos was found guilty Wednesday in federal court of conspiracy to distribute marijuana.

Burgos, a 15-year veteran, has been on unpaid administrative leave since his May 2009 arrest and the city's police chief says he will move to fire him.

Prosecutors say in January 2009 Burgos had a 54-second telephone conversation with the dealer in which he said undercover officers were near the garage where the dealer worked.

Burgos' lawyer tells The Telegram & Gazette that while what his client did was wrong, he never told the dealer he was under investigation and it didn't make him a part of the drug ring.
