I don't know why it surprises you. Yes, they want to control the personal lives of everyone, even though they claim to be in favor of smaller government. Laws which intrude upon people's private lives require a high degree of enforcement, and restrictions on the behaviors that make enforcement difficult as well as on the behavior itself. Case in point: what would it actually take to enforce a ban on the use of contraceptives? An unjust law does not gain the cooperation of the general public to inform on others and to accept limitations on their own independence for the sake of such enforcement.
The wingnut far right efforts to mold everyone to their view of morality is doomed to failure, and it will be an expensive failure. Not just economically, but politically as well.
