Are car paint jobs a good idea for all cars?

I'm getting my grandmas 2003 Taurus for my first car. It's pretty decent and all but the only problem is that it's white, and I absolutely HATE white cars. So I didn't know what either a dark grey, black or red paint job would look like, something cute? Anybody that has had paint jobs or does them, please answer. I need all the help I can get (;
