Applications don't use WiFi on G1

Have a question for you experts...

My internet at home is fast.
But for some reason, my G1 can get connect onto my wifi network (in setup) with a Very Good connection, get an IP Address, but none of the applications use the wifi. I can't get on the market or use the browser.
All my applications time out saying that there is a network error.
I can use my laptop against the same wifi and surf the web without any problems.
I've unlocked my phone, and i'm using the phone on the AT&T, but that shouldn't be the issue....
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

Possibly some of the ports are blocked by your router you are connecting through? Try to OPEN up the network and see if it works. It could be the problem on the router and not the phone...

I'm not sure that this is the problem. My laptop works fine on the same network, and it has the same network access premissions that my G1 has.

> Sounds to me like you are using a Pre-N router or trying to use WPA2 security, neither of which the G1 connects to well.

My router is a normal Linksys G+ router. And my router uses the Open / WEP security.

Any other ideas?

Can't really help you since I don't have a G1 but this is why I didn't get one because I'm on AT&T and I'm unsure how well this phone works unlocked. Try to search "unlock*" and maybe you might find some other posts on unlocked phones and see if anyone was able to make wi-fi work.

The user anyways seems to have an unlocked phone and also not being on T-mobile and got wi-fi to work so I don't think it's an issue with it being unlocked. You can try contacting him and see how he got his wi-fi to work.

If you want to totally eliminate the router as the problem you can try opening it up with no protection and test the G1 then.

I went through a similar scenario with my G1. I am using a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband router.

The issue which I found that appears to have been causing the problem is the length of the WEP or WPA passphrase being used.

I shortened my WPA-PSK passphrase to 8 characters (still using alphanumeric for some peace of mind for security) and the G1 now attaches just fine and delivers content across my WiFi network.

I was experiencing the same symptoms you're describing when I was using longer PSKs. My G1 would connect successfully to the WiFi network, but no data would actual pass across the link.

I think that Rynosaur and Netcom both have valid points, and you should verify your WAP config.

You may want to back out of your WEP config entirely and see what settings do, and do not work with your G1. I started by configuring my WAP with no security and attempted attaching my G1 just so that I could be sure the phone could indeed use a wireless network. After that, I just started working my way through WEP and WPA settings with short and then longer keys.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

Hello All,

I reached this post, while facing a similar issue of Wifi not working on my G1.
I have gone through the posts and replies on this issue carefully and discovered that I practically did all of the recommended steps, i.e. Trying "no security" to WEP and WPA etc securities.

I am on a D-Link Dir-300. And 3 laptops and an iPhone and a G1 already run on its wifi and security type, like a charm.

Now the 'fun' began when my brother bought a second hand (unlocked) G1 from market today and SNAP! it was not making it through to Wifi. Yes it got connected successfully, and I even checked in Status of Router's config, and it was there. but no browsing.

I put my personal and brother's G1s together and started comparing. The difference came out to be of different build numbers.
Mine is DMD64
and my brother's is DRC92.

Honestly I dont know about difference of builds being making difference here.

Please help, I am desperate..

I had a similar situation with Droid X, frustrating as heck. Just changed to WPA only and used a shorter phrase. Bingo. THX TheDroid!
