Apple iPhone 3G [S] vs. HTC/Google Nexus One

Keyboard or no keyboard is a personal preference to the individual so can't comment there, for as for point B - I think it was assumed by the OP that there would be a version for every carrier in the US which means AT&T 3G bands.

Google is providing the sale of the NexusOne with the carrier having the option to provide a subsidy for a contract on it but it isn't sold through them - so I'm not sure at all how open the NexusOne is. Is it unlocked? any carrier bloat on that carrier's version? etc etc. I would need to know these specifics before I judged it. It would likely have the features requested if it was truly not tied to the carrier.

Its not even legal.. and apple is always trying to find way to stop jailbreaking... thats the hassle you deal with to get half the multitasking functionality as Andriod...

Other OSes dont really need to jaillbreak to do basic multitaskings.. just pick up a WinMO, Blackberry, Palm, Symbian, Maemo or andriod handset to find that out lol....

BTW I am looking at my jailbroken 3g... and you cannot do the all things on a Jailbroken Iphone that you can on the Nexus... andriod is just seemless when i comes to that...

I would not. On the Quad Core I can install a new operating system, be it free Linux or buy Windows 7. If I owned the P3 computer I will simply have to buy a new PC, because on such an old beast nothing can be upgraded anymore. Now with which machine would I be better off? ;)

I think my new Nexus One will be upgradeable for QUITE a while yet... the hardware is in order. Glad I made that decision! :clapping:

Let me add something. The iPhone OS UI only displays a screen object with a very fixed size. It does not allow for dynamically sized objects like you do on a Windows or Mac desktop. But dynamically sized, I mean like real time widgets of different sizes. On my Windows desktop right now, Yahoo Messenger and Google Desktop on the screen are examples of real time web widgets. They constantly provide information on a real time basis and are sized much differently from other desktop objects.

Android allows dynamically sized objects to be resident on the home screen, whether its an app launching icon or a real time widget, like for example, one that constantly displays a real time Twitter news feed. I can do that, and display a Facebook news feed widget next to it.

The Android drag and drop gesture allows you to move and station icons around these irregularly sized widgets, not matter the length-width ratios or size. Right now, I got four app icons around each corner of my circular clock widget, which is itself on top a long rectangular Facebook widget.

now that the Nexus One is officially available for the
AT&T 3G network how many iPhone users are considering switching ?

it's a real drag having apple dictate what i can and
can't do with my iphone and it's only getting worse !

the Nexus One has a larger screen, higher resolution,
faster cpu, supports multitasking, has a replaceable battery and docking station.

first part of your quote: I label someone as a fanboy when they think the iPhone is the end all be all. that there is no other good device out there. one that totally disregards the fact that another manufacturer can bring a device to the table with some features that are groundbreaking and add an experience that the iPhone can not deliver (or deliver as well). nothing wrong with disagreeing, we all have our own opinions and like what we like. but there are some apple fans drink so much of the kool aid that they think the world would be better off if nobody else even produced a device to compete with the iPhone.

As for the second part, give me the Quad Core with ME. I'll run Ubuntu alongside ME.

I'm not anti Apple in the slightest bit. I love their products, I have nothing but macs in my home and have to force myself to use PC's at my business. However, you have to admit some of the Apple fans can go to an extreme that can embarrass us Apple fans. The elitist attitude so to speak. It makes us look silly at times. I'm all for competition that will hopefully push Apple forward. Without the growing popularity of Android and with the introduction of webOS and Maemo, I seriously doubt the rumored inclusion of multitasking in OS 4.0 would have ever materialized. Different products for different people, the more competition the better it is for all of us.

Currently, I have no rush to go to any phone.
I have had Blackberry (on Nexthell), WinMo (on Sprint Treo 800w and AT&T HTC Tilt) and now iPhone.

iPhone:
+ simplicity
+ it just works well (voice still is so-so compared to HTC Tilt)
- no multitasking
- ugly mega connector (should have been able to have mini/micro USB)
- lack of customization
- fixed battery

Will the droid have the apps I want/need when I'm done with iPhone... probably things will have changed enough by then that even the iPhone won't be the same.

It's a nice piece of kit but is by no means an "iPhone Killer". In all android devices there is a major flaw where it does not allow install of any apps to external media. I know they have committed to fixing this in the future bit right now this is an unacceptable flaw. As was eloquently stated by another on this forum, the only iPhone killer is Apple and only when they release a new and better model.

Why should I tell you? Your the one who told me that my example of multitasking wasn't with intensive apps and now you expect me to tell you which ones are.

That's less intensive than my first example and works without a problem.

What????

Differ apps are written differently.

iPod touch huh? You do know the 3GS is twice as fast.

Done trying. My example of multitasking is good enough to satisfy me that the iPhone is more than capable. You can try to hog the CPU and/or RAM of any mobile OS and eventually will succeed, but what would be the point of that?

The iPhone is definitely good for heavy and regular daily multitasking.

Ok .... :bulging:

Music isn't CPU intensive because the main work is being done by a DSP off the CPU.

Really? When I get news notifications my video feed stutters.

Don't know much about OS design do you? Even if the apps themselves are not launched, they can still have memory resident threads that constantly check for events. Even the iPhone is starting to use a few itself, although it started only with OS 3.0. That's the basis for real time instant notifications.

So often the case. We're talking of apps that must permanently reside and remain in contact with cloud servers. That's the basis of an OS that is social networking and Cloud optimized to able to present an ambient stream of information to the user.

Wrong. 3rd gen iPod Touch uses the same core as the 3GS. I got two 3GS in the house and it clearly feels the same as my 64GB iPod Touch.

You fail to understand that the iPhone OS is smooth because it throws more cycles into the interface. A lot less happening under the hood.

Not disputing that it is, but when it becomes so, it will just feel no differently than Android.

Nothing else?

How about:
- no proper exchange sync
- no copy and paste (in emails)
- no file attachments for emails (besides pics)

Should I go on?

and this is supposed to be a SMARTphone?
Even feature-phones have those functions.

As I see it, there is no iPhone defeater presently. The Droid the Nexus are nothing more than 'iPhone wannabes" with their own pros and cons, but nothing compared to the iPhone.

However, I feel that Apple is taking a backseat presently. They need to release an update that will allow users to customize their iPhone (themes, add options to the lock screen, run at least 1 other app in background, etc). And yes, I understand this is an option via jailbreak, but Apple needs to stay on top of this.

This year, it is predicted that there will be approximately 50 new phones running the android OS. 50 different phones running android vs 1 phone running iPhone OS.

Actually if you ever used an android phone for more than five minutes, you would see how gchat runs all the time seamlessly in the background with no delay. How googlemaps latitude updates your position automatically in the background constantly. How googlevoice can be your default voicemail even though people call your non Google voice number. It spells out your text and you can also listen to them instantly on your android phone. Its like visual VISUAL voicemail. Gmail is instant push. All this for free and doesn't take a toll on your battery.

As for iPhone can do this and that. There are no excuses. All I'm saying is its been done already and apple makes it look like a new feature all together.

Its just a part of the sync package I guess... I didnt know it would do that but I checked my phone and there the album was. The thumbnails you can see offline, but you need a data connection to access the pictures stored in picasa, that you can see in your gallery. Basically it doesnt download them to your phone...

And obviously you can upload the opposite way back to picasa...
