In Unicorn Land, companies will spend billions on R&D for a new product and simply release all the details and code to their competitors and anyone interested. Profits and protecting your market segment is devil work.

That's bullshit. And I believe the SC has ruled that anything you purchase is your property and you can do with it what you like.

No, of course you cannot do anything you want with your property. Whatever stipulations you agreed to whenever you purchased something are binding.

When you buy a DVD, you are making an agreement that you will not make copies of it (except for 1 personal backup copy).


Apple controls their software and hardware. You don't have a right to code whatever you want on their developer platform. Regardless if you buy an iphone or not, a developer must agree with whatever terms Apple requires or develop something for someone else. Apple is not abusing their rights by being an uber controlling company.

Even under contract you still own the phone.. Breaking the contract will just cost you money. And the money isn't to pay for the phone you have possession of, but its for breaking a legally binding contract. It's not like you're making payments on the phone itself like an auto loan.
 
I'm not talking about payments. I'm talking about how Apple has a right to see that software is developed a certain way, even after individuals have purchased iphones.

Depends on the country. In Canada we are charged a fee on all blank media disks as a concession that we will be downloading or copying existing media with it.

Apple is abusing their rights as much as most other companies in terms of protecting their software. For instance they say you can't unlock their phone but you can legally unlock any phone. It does not make the warranty void. There are other little tweaks to the software you can do that they don't want you to.

Amazon recently ran afoul of a similar pricing fiasco, with their Kindle e-books. Their pricing was, apparently, set with little regard to publisher's wishes.

Proprietary nonsense really triggers my inner dictator.
