I agree. It is a subject that I am not too familiar with and I am really interested to learn more about it. Mel does a great job of painting the picture so I really excited to see this
I wasn;'t planning on seeing this in theatres. i was waiting 4 dvd. But im on the program council @ my school and they got some free passes 2 a screening of it thursday. i think i might go lol
I saw the trailers not knowing it was this movie and I have to say, I'm very interested. Doesn't mean I'll like it or that the whole movie is actually good, but as far as interest goes, I'm down with it.
Here is the origanial trailer of the movie that was released in I think January YouTube - Apocalypto
The lead actor in the trailer isn't Rudy Youngblood WTF? Does anyone know anything about this? I'm so confused! There isn't anything on imdb about a change.
I totally agree with you...I love the fact that they are doing am ovie based on a topic that has not been done before...it makes it so much more interesting to go and see it. I think that Gibson is going to do a fantastic job with it...
I can't wait to watch this movie. I liked the previews , very colorful and the story seems new and fresh , not the usual ; as in not seen before except maybe on the History channel.
Gibson's personal choices are not of interest to me -- what he does in his personal life does not change the fact that this film will be phenomenal. He is known for illustrating a powerful perspective and I am interested to see how touches on this intriguing subject (the fall of the Mayan civilization) that has not been done before...
While watching the movie, I leaned over to my father and asked him if he would have liked to have lived like that during that time? "HELL NO! Thank God for Hernan Cortés!" :rotfl:
A lot of my students saw it and thought it was awesome, which is a huge compliment since many of them stick to the typical teen horror flicks, and never watch subtitled movies.
In a word: Mayans. It's pretty much about their kingdom towards its decline, or so I've read. I can't say that I remember ever seeing a movie about the Mayans. I saw one about the Aztecs as a teen in theatres that kicked ass, and with this being a Mel Gibson film, I'm sure it will only be better.
Mel Gibson stepped over the line with his Anti-Semitic remarks. There is nothing in the world that is going to live down this amount of bad PR in my opinion.
He and his people can try and spin the reason for this was because he was drunk all they want... Which is illogical in the first place because being drunk and resisting arrest is supposedly "okay" by itself... But the damage is done.
Also, the reason "The Passion of the Christ" was a hit was more because of the current religious and political climate in this country right now more than it being a "good" film in a lot of critics opinions. I have not seen it... Nor do I intend to... But I've been told all it is is a public execution and the fact it is Jesus, is the only really moving part about it... Which is why all the Christian groups (churches; community groups; etc.) bought ticket after ticket and is why it became the multi-billion dollar hit it was two years ago if we are going to be objective about its success.
Apocalypto may very well be Mel Gibson's hubris incarnate because even without his arrest and the remarks he made... As BabyJ said, the film itself doesn't even look that interesting when all the visuals are stripped away and audiences... As shallow as they are... Have their limits and don't exactly take to "arthouse" films like this as much as Mel might think (because he is equating the success of "The Passion" with it being a good film versus some of the more probable reasons I went into above) in my opinion.
Props to Gibson, the film was number one at the box office this weekend. That is great. I was out of town this week so I am going to see it this week but everyone I have talked to said it was phenomonal. I can't wait.
I'm not defending Mel Gibson's crazy drunken tirade but I think that people should not let that keep them from seeing this movie. If you put aside Gibson's opinions and beliefs, you will notice that he's a pretty good director. He's got an oscar to prove it, lol. I just wish I could figure out what this new movie is about.
And while the scenery and just visuals in general were amazing, the movie looks blah to me. Couldn't tell what the plot was and the trailer seemed a bit too choppy. Perhaps the choppy feeling also comes from the fact that there's no dialogue or voiceover whatsoever.
And juding from the reaction of the audience, which was pretty large, I get the feeling this movie will bomb.
