Im doing a presentation at college on Tuesday about going green and climate change.
Going Green?
Global warming, climate change, the end? This huge problem comes with so many names, all trying to illustrate a point that no one wants to hear.
Countless advertisements, speeches, rants of the apocalypse coming every single year... the day after tomorrow just might come true and yet we all treat it as a joke.
We have been offered alternatives to this impending calamity, different forms of getting the energy we use up every day. But after all this time of society begging for these options, no one seems to want to do anything with them.
Take for example, wind farms, they are the cleanest and safest forms of energy, but no one seems to want them on their doorstep. They claim they are too noisy or ugly; it’s the nimby effect (not in my backyard). Here’s a fact, standing at the recommended safe distance for wind turbines the only noise you can here is a faint buzzing, nothing more than the sound of a fridge! And I can think of an uglier picture than wind farms, paying hundreds of pounds for a drop of petrol or gas so we can carry on our present style of existence.
So why do we all sit here wasting our planets precious resources, destroying our home and forcing the planets wildlife to extinction? Is it because we don’t care, or because we simply can’t be bothered?
Well I do care, and I can be bothered and so do a huge number of people, but our efforts are eclipsed by the actions of others.
You’ve heard it all before, just the simple action of turning off a light when you leave the room, not leaving the tap on, or buying locally grown goods instead of foreign alternatives. For example, a punnet of strawberries from Tesco, you have a choice, Spanish grown or Hampshire’s own. Normally you would pick the Spanish ones because they’re a few pence cheaper. But just think how far those strawberries had to travel, and what the producers used to make sure they looked good when they got here.
So you’re probably thinking one of two options, one I’m a nutter and I’m boring you to death, or two you want to help make a difference, but you don’t know how.
As I mentioned, there are simple things that make small differences but there are other options that can make a big difference. For example joining a group, such as Greenpeace or even Itchen’s very own Green Group.
Thats what ive got so far, it needs to be about 3 minutes and will be accompanied by a slideshow of images.
Anything anyone would add or change?
