I have been quite busy lately, and i haven't got to look in my favorite section lately. So anything new? What have theoretical physicist's been up too lately?

The National Ignition Facility has designed an approach to creating fusion in the form of a miniature Sun on Earth--without the use of magnets to contain it--based on Newton's 3rd Law. They're thinking of using this technology to boil water to turn turbines, generating electricity. But IMHO, at 180 million deg. F., all the waters in the oceans would boil away, and all the fish, lobsters, clams, shrimp, etc. would be cooked. Perhaps all the cryogens from the Hadron Collider can be used to extinguish the mini-Sun if we had to.

Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) is a great idea, but somewhat misguided in its application. This technology would be great for nuking the SUN to keep it from going nova on us someday. Watch the movie "Sunshine" and you'll know what I'm referring to. The question which remains to be answered is: when do we send the Deuterium/tritium to the Sun...in 1 billion years, in 2 billion years?

Another application would be to use this to keep Earth's core molten forever. Watch the movie, The CORE. These powerful lasers would burn straight to the core, at which point we drop in some deuterium/tritium, then FOCUS the laser on the deuterium to ignite it. No need to go on a suicide mission into the core as the movie depicts. This will keep the Earth's core molten and liquid, preventing it from cooling and solidifying, preventing any loss of our global magnetic field.

Earthlings should go SOLAR since solar energy is FREE and CLEAN energy. Our Sun will always be getting hotter and hotter, increasing in luminosity for the next 4.5 billion years.

Immediate need: Powerful Lasers like this should be used to EXCAVATE on other worlds like the Moons and Mars. There, rocks will glow red hot and crumble, so Superconducting Magnetic Rings can be imbedded as deep as these new Lasers will let them go, preferably near the CORE, in order to create "global" magnetic fields on them which deflect cosmic rays. Magnetic fields also prevent any water from being photodissociated by solar uv.

Because of the hostile environments in Space, this type of Laser would be perfect for heating/drilling all the way to the CORE as quickly as possible. I had looked into the IPG Photonic's super pulsed fiber laser, but any powerful laser such as this one would ace the job.

This technology should be used to re-ignite Mars' defunct GEODYNAMO--this is the perfect application for this laser. In fact, all 170+ moons can now have geodynamos in their CORES to generate magnetic fields which deflect dangerous cosmic rays, otherwise--galactic, solar, extragalactic, ultra high energy, and anamolous rays--would bombard us. An atmosphere on the other hand, blocks out uv, x-rays and gamma radiation.

Well, the Kepler mission is now starting to find Earth size planets among others.
P.S.
If the great but late Richard Feynman would be still amongst us, he for sure could inform you what the theortical physicist comunity has and is up to.

how about this news, closest stars to the black hole in center of the Milky Way have interesting spin tracks. They are spinning around black hole, they are unusually fast, actually they are hanging out there. Track of closest star is so irregular just like an insect moving back and forth around a light bulb. Did you know that? To read more about this, check Astronomy Newsletter, i read it few months ago.

"What have theoretical physicist's been up too lately?" Mind your own business.

How's this for a start? I read in Sky & Tel that a planet of the order of Earth-size has been detected around a star of about sun-size. The planet orbits its star every 18 hours a distance of 0.035 astronomical units.

Apparently Dick Cheney considers it to be a perfect example of how western industrialisation can make a freezing planet into a paradise.
