Anything I copy and paste in Photoshop comes out transparent?

Every time I try and copy and paste something from a layer, it creates a new layer with the copied image transparent. The blend mode of the new layer is normal and the opacity and fill is set to 100%. What is going on?
I am on the right layer and I am copying a section of the image I want - it's just that the copied section ends up being like 50% or so transparent.
 
How are you selecting your section you want to copy? Are you in Quick Mask mode? That could be the problem. -OR- is the part of your image you want to copy in several layers? If so, you can merge layers & then copy the selected area.
 
make sure you are clicked onto the layer you want to cut, you must be on a layer that is blank
