The experimental question for this experiment we did was basically “Will smaller molecules diffuse at a faster rate than large molecules”. Diffusion is the movement of a chemical from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration. The question is important because we were trying to figure out exactly what factors influence the actual rate of transport. We did this through observing diffusion through a couple of different ways. To observe the effect of molecule size on diffusion rate we took samples of three different dyes (Potassium Permanganate, Malachite Green, and Janus Green B). We put each product in a well and we put the plate to a 50 degree incubator. At the end of a certain time we measured the distance for each liquid and calculated the rate of diffusion. Our hypothesis stated “ Smaller molecules will diffuse at a faster rate than larger molecules”. This however turned out not to be true as the heaviest molecule took the least time to diffuse. For our second experiment that involved Osmosis the experimental question was “Will a higher temperature have a greater degree of weight change”. We were trying to figure out what exactly cause a weight change and if a higher temperature causes a more significant weight change. At this point we were observing osmosis and what factors influence the rate of transport for it. The hypothesis we had regarding the effect of the different solutions on the rate of osmosis was that the 10% salt would have increased water weight, the 0.9% would show little change and that the distilled water would have an increase in weight. Some of our results proved out hypothesis was right, and some were a little off. Our hypothesis concerning the effect of temperature on the rate of osmosis was “The higher the temperature, the greater degree of weight change”.
