If so, would you provide me with their name and whether or not you would recommend them to me?

I ran into one of the doctors at my church and he told me I needed to go to a big hospital such as Georgetown or Hopkins for my back because they deal with complicated cases such as mine. I am supposed to call his office tomorrow to get the names and it would be nice if I know someone else who uses them.

My PCP referred me to a Dr. William Lauerman at Georgetown who has an office practice and is also a professor in the orthopaedic surgery department.

I saw him a while back and will be going to see him next week actually for a 6 (maybe 7 month) follow-up with a new set of MRI's to review.

I liked the doctor and would recommend him but his front office left a little to be desired in my opinion (not all that well organized and I think I waited for over an hour to be seen after my scheduled appt time and even then, they told me to arrive a half hour early I think - but I was also a new patient and they seemed to need a bunch of info to enter into their system). When I first made an appoitment, think there was about a 2 month wait give or take. Parking wasn't all that fun either at Georgetown and if you do go, I'd give yourself plenty of time to find a parking spot and then find his office unless you are already familiar with the hospital.

The doc took plenty of time to examine me, listened to my 3 year history of events, asked and answered several questions, examined me and in the end, was the doctor who referred me over to see Dr. Dade at the Capital Spine and Pain Centers (which has been a big help) since Lauerman felt my conditions (both cervical and lurabar) were not to the point where I had to hop up on a table and he felt I could benefit from the cortisone injects / blocks, PT, and perhaps some other conservative treatments rather than anything else at the moment.

So getting back to your question - he is the only doc at GT I know and that was on referral from my PCP who has a high opinion of him and has sent some of her other patients there as needed.

When I called to make an appt, the operator tried to talk me into seeing a different ortho surgeon who could see me earlier since dr Lauerman's schedule was fairly booked but I just stayed with Lauerman since again, it was the PCP's opinion I've come to trust for keeping me on my feet (literally).

Good luck and again, give yourself that extra time to park if you go. They have a covered lot and then one in the open prior to getting to the covered lot. I drove around the covered lot for 25 minutes waiting for a spot to open and then went out and was going to park out at a meter but the closer in lot had opened up a few slots.

Alan.

Thanks Alan so much. I just had someone else recommend a Dr. Sandhu at Georgetown. Are you familiar with this person by chance?

Thank you Alan. I can't find your doctors name in the Kaiser speciality referral handbook. :(

Pepper, my current surgeon is from John Hopkins. You can check out his bio and credentials online. His name is Dr. Ali Moshirfar. Nice guy, straight shooter type. He also has his own practice, with a pain management guy that I've seen before and he is super friendly. Center is called Advanced Orthopedics & Pain Management.

I mentioned in another post I can't locate at the moment.. have you checked out the Virginia Spine Institute surgeons. These guys are also up at the top of the list for spine surgeons in this area.

UVA is also recommended, and heard they have some great ones there as well.

All my best to you. :)

Unfortunately, VA Virginia Spine Institute and Dr. Ali Moshirfar is not in my Kaiser Speciality Handbook.:( At this point, I am trying to stay on plan to save $$ but if it comes to it I will go off plan and pay out of pocket. I feel first I need to explore those on plan.

Thank you so much for these suggestions and please keep them coming.

I have been please with the Blaustein Pain Treatment Center at Johns Hopkins. The doctors are a variety a specialists and your case is reviewed and you are placed with one that matches your neeRAB. However, the purpose is pain-management only not spinal surgery. They do things like implants and pumps, etc and those kinRAB of "surgery". You must have a physician referral. My particular issue is SI joint pain and they have done my RFA. Best of luck to you!
