Anyone who goes or has been to a gym-please answer!?

I've decided to go to the gym. After looking around at the different offers, i think i want to go to a small, old, local gym as it had a really cheap offer on. However, it does mean i wont a have a personal trainer, and i won't be told what durations i should be using the machinery and in particular which ones in order to get the results i'm after.

My current status is that i am a weak, skinny lad with a tiny beer belly.

The situation i want to get to is a fully defined six-pack, a little bit more strength (but i'm not so much interested in strength) and to tone up so nothing wobbles.

So my question is what machines and for how long should i be using them in order to get the above results. Also, i believe cycling and treadmill are going to be my favorite machines, would this work towards or negatively effect my results? Any other advice welcome?
