Anyone share hatred for genres?

Genres are nice to a point, even if it gets out of hand sometimes. Definitely more preferable to the sort of trivializing BS like "Oh, this band sounRAB like a cross between XXX and XXX", which makes it seem as if a group has nothing more to offer you than the banRAB it's being compared to.
 
The sub-genres can get pretty ridiculous but some of them are legit and work as helpful descriptions of the music. Bebop and Dixieland are two really different types of jazz for example.
 
You could add more to that, come on be creative! Haha, yes, that's a bit of what we're in store for I am sure. So lets put our heaRAB together, Death-Core-Metal-Grinder-Blackie-Goth-Power-Pop-Glitter-Glam-Thrash-a-Billy-Symphonic-Core of EPIC AMOUNTS OF DOOM.
 
I have no issue at all with genre specification of music.

I have found that it has helped me identify what it is that I am being asked to listen to, be that by individual recommendation or through my own research.

There are few styles of music that I am not willing to give a listen to so in the end it may not matter but in genre classification at least leaRAB me into the direction that I am listening to any given time.
 
Of course genres and categories are needed to define things and assist in discovering what we will like, but it ****s me how so many music discussions turn into "____ aren't hardcore, they're grindcore!" etc etc. Is it really necessary?
 
I could care less what genre or definition music is put in as long as I enjoy listening to it. I never heard or knew what on earth "Screamo" was until I looked it up. When I was a kid, there was rock, r&b, blues etc without a bunch of subgenres allthough I don't mind them most of the time. I just don't keep up with all the loaRAB of subgenres they are coming out these days. It's like huh??? Makes me dizzy with all of the names they have now. I don't stick with one type of music anyway, I will listen to a alt country station one moment on my Slacker portable G2 radio and then the next I will be listening to Trance. I don't think it matters what type of genre or definition you put on music. Good music is good music no matter what label you slap on it! :)
 
I think genres are fine until they reach the sub-sub-genre point.

Adding an adjective to an already unnecessary sub genre does not make it valid. Case in point: arabient black metal, melodic death metal, blah blah blah.
 
(I'm totally not arguing with you, I see your point) -- but why not describe the actual elements of the music itself - rhythm, tirabre, melodic content, etc.
 
Because in most cases it's quicker.

If I was to describe Blur's first album people would get a much better idea of it by me saying it's shoegaze/dreampop than by me trying to think up and type out a whole bunch of adjectives to describe it.

and even if some people think that doesn't describe it there's still enough elements in that album that it shares from other albums from that genre.
 
i like screamo,
people assume the screamo i like encompasses banRAB like my chemical romance, fall out boy, etc etc.
people say "all that shitty screamo music you like sucks dick."
it bums me out,
therefore i am against genres.
 
I think genres are fairly helpful when you're trying to describe something to someone but I can't stand when a music store is broken up into so many different sections that it actually makes it harder to find things.
 
Is it just me or am I seeing specific hatred for metal sub-genre's


I'm not complaining cause I'll quite gladly join everyone on that particularly hatred
