Anyone Seen A Movie In A US Cinema?

I've been to the cinema in the US a few times.

Had both experiences that people have described here. Sometimes, it's just been like a normal visit to a UK cinema, where people sit and watch the film quietly. Other times, it's been extremely irritating, with lots of people cheering, whooping and shouting out stupid comments throughout the film.

In the second experience, it wasn't just a few disruptive people. It seemed to be a perfectly tolerated and acceptable way to behave in the cinema, even though it was very distracting. To be honest, it just seemed really mindless and ridiculous - like they couldn't possibly concentrate on a film for two hours without shouting something out.
 
I saw The Sixth Sense in America and also Stir of Echoes. I was in New Jersey and didn't think the audience were particularly OTT, but then they aren't the kind of films to whoop at!

The one thing that struck me about American cinemas was the popcorn which I totally fell in love with!!! Hot buttered popcorn is (although a heart attack waiting to happen) the nicest thing ever!!!
 
i think it depenRAB on they type of movie. i can see it with Will Ferrell because he is a well loved comic type.

i have never seen it. mind you when i saw Gangs of New York and Chicago at the Warner Village in Plymouth people clapped at the end.
 
Depending on what movie is being shown, a theater experience can be fun... average.... or somber.

During "Star Wars: Attack of the Clones", when Yoda fought against Count Dooku, the audience cheered the little bastard on. It was fun to be a part of that. :)

When I saw "Saving Private Ryan", it was deathly quiet as the ending credits rolled onscreen. Many people just stayed in their seats. :cry:
 
I went to see Finding Nemo in Belfast, and everyone except me was white, bizarre!
There was some whooping and aaahing (not from me, though, bizarre)
And I was not escorted out, bizarre
 
Personally i prefer to hear the film without the audience ruining it. I dont mind if they clap at the end.
The few films ive seen people clap here? Volver, Pans Labarythn & Death Proof (but all at special showings).
I think the only normal viewing I saw people clap here was for Rocky Balboa, and I joined in to. Special film :D
 
I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean in Hawaii and there was none of this nonsense! :confused: Maybe the place was full of tourists...

The only time I've ever known an audience in the UK to break into spontaneous applause was during Grosse Point Blank. It was a student crowd and the laughter had been getting louder and louder as the film went on (it is one of my all-time favourites, sooo funny) and when Dan Akroyd says "that punk's either in love with that guy's daughter or he has a new-found respect for life" the whole audience laughed so much we all just started clapping. :D I think people cheered at the end too, by that point I was just crying with laughter.
 
But who are you clapping? The film doesn't know you're clapping it. I normally associate applauding with giving thanks/praise to a living entity. I'd feel a bit silly clapping nothingness.
