I'd be interested to know if anyone has been taking fish oil supplements while pregnant? Or anyone on here that did take them during past pregnancy?

I've read that omega-3 is really good for a babies brain development, especially during the 3rd trimester. Fish oil capsules are a great source of this, and so is fish but doctors ask you not to eat too much fish. I googled the fish oil caps and found a lot of similar information, along w/ blogs where pregnant women had said their doctor recommended the fish oil during pregnancy.

I called my doctor and was kind of suprised w/ her response after what I had read online. She said generally fish oil capsules are not recommended for pregnant women as they are a class "C" medicine, which basically means there haven't been sufficient studies showing the benefits out weigh the risks. However, there have also been no studies that show any negative effects on a human or animal fetus from use of such a supplement.

I can imagine that some opinions may be that mercury is the issue w/ the capsules, but this is not the case. The supplements I have contain no mercury, and that is not a factor in why my doctor "generally doesn't recommend them."

So... opinions and/or experience ladies? Thanks!!
