When I was in Middle School-13 years ago, I checked out a book from the school library about two sisters who were displaced because of the bombings in Japan during WWII. The book talks about the girls having to move and going to a new school and they were kind of ostracized. Near the end, the older sister has to take a final sewing exam in her Home-Ec class and the other girls in the class replaced her white thread with red so she would fail, but instead of despairing she was able to still sew the garment with no seams showing.
My nieces are about the same age I was and I have been making lists of books they might also enjoy.
Thank you.
