anyone know anything with sirius radio?

so my cd player/head unit will only pick up the local radio stations if im in or very close to that town as well as on top of a mountain....however my sirius is hooked up and ready to go but when i turn it on...doesn't get much signal either through the head unit...if I actually call in and purchase the subscription will it come in clear like it should or do I need a new head unit?
other ppl have sirius in my area and it works fine?
