Anyone know American History?!?!?

Hi guys,
I need a little bit of help... I just wrote a 17 pager paper for my U.S. History class on the major important events in American history from first contact through the Civil War in 1861. The rough draft of this paper counted as the class' midterm exam and the final draft of it is to take place of the final exam, and it is due next week. I was returned the rough draft of my essay last week in class and noticed "GAP!" written in red ink between two of my paragraphs. In my paper, I kind of jumped from the admittance of the United States Constitution in 1787 to the beginning of the Civil War in 1862 (so there most definitely was a gap--like a hundred years). Now I must fill in the important events that took place between then. Can anybody suggest to me what I should write about? What is worth noting in American History between 1787 and 1861? Thanks guys!!!

How about the very important Monroe Doctrine, the influence of the Napoleonic Wars and the Louisiana Purchase, The war of 1812, and the war of Mexican Cession. Then there is the founding of Texas. The great political struggles regard slave and free state admission. Did you learn any of this in your class? This is just the tip of the iceburg. Ever heard of Lewis and Clark, or the great wagon trains? How about the plains indian wars and the California and N.Dakota gold strikes. Unbelievable.

Hmmm there were a few events that I can think of that might be worth mentioning!

The Louisiana Purchase - 1803
The War of 1812
Indian Removal Act of 1830
and then all of the controversy that led up to the Civil War.

Hope that helped a bit!
