Anyone know about traveling from New York City to Lincoln Nebraska, and vice versa?

I have hardly traveled very far from NYC. I need information about traveling to Lincoln Nebraska from New York City. Airplane travel would be most efficient but I would like to know information about traveling by train. How long by train? I only know of Amtrak. Any other? I heard there are several stops when a train is traveling that far from NYC and it can take several hours (as much as 8 hours) for the connecting train to come. Will the train leave a passenger by the side of a road, or in a transportaion terminal with some bathrooms and maybe a library nearby where someone could at least read some books while waiting? Cost? Any bargain fares anyone know of? Anyone tried traveling from NYC to Nebraska by train?

Where in NY would or could I get a flight to Nebraska? I know that there can be different prices, but anyone know about bargain airfares? Anyone know how long it can take by airplane from NY to Lincoln Nebraska? I guess a non-stop flight would be more expensive right? Anyone know how long it takes non-stop and the longest it can take with one stop or more? Anyone know about inexpensive hotels near Rose Street? Anyone know where the airplane will land in Nebraska? Anyone know if paying for a round trip ticket would cost more or less than buying one-way fare from NY to Nebraska and then paying one-way for a ticket to Nebraska to NY? If I were to buy R/T at NY would I have to use the returning ticket by a certain time? I have heard that (at least sometimes) you have to inform the airline of when you intend to come back so you can be given a ticket to use at a certain day. True? I have only flown once in my life and that was in 1995. I am not so familiar with purchasing flight tickets and arranging with airline ticket agents the details of flight. Do not be afraid to provide step by step instructions. Just don't be nasty or sarcastic about my lack of experience with travel.

Thanks
