Anyone here converted from the K800i to the N73? Or the other way round?

I returned my 3rd faulty k800i a few days ago to T Mobile UK and I wont be requesting another one. I've just had too many problems with the phones, so I'm trying to decide which phone to purchase next. I was thinking about the N73.

Has anyone here moved from the K800i to the N73? If so, are you glad you did or do you wish you kept with the K800i? Or vice-versa, have you changed from the N73 to the k800i? Your findings will be gratefully appreciated.

Cheers

I got a K800i as an upgrade to a W800i from last year. Then I switched from the K800i to a Nokia N73...

The things I liked about the K800i:

- The flash on the camera!
- General camera quality
- The interface speed was good and intuitive (coming from a W800i, it had to be really)
- Camera again, the Best Pic feature is fantastic!
- The build quality, it was very solid.
- The screen was nice and clear
- SEUS, can easily update firmware

The things I didn't like on the K800i

- The shape of the thing on the back, it's curved to accomodate the camera lens cover
- The flimsiness of said lens shutter
- Proprietary Sony M2 memory cards - these are expensive!
- Bluetooth speed is quite slow (compared to the N73)

I switched to the N73 because I had a dead pixel out of the box, in the middle of the screen on the K800i. I would have swapped it anyway cos I hate dead/stuck pixels and if I can buy a 24" 1920x1600 resolution LCD without any dead pixels, then a piddly little phone with a 2.5" screen and 240x320 resolution should be able to manage it!

Now, I've not had the N73 all that long, but here are my general impressions so far:

Things I like:

- The screen - it's large, bright and clear
- The looks (very subjective)
- The camera quality (it's as good as the K800i's)
- Memory (Mini SD) is cheap!
- The possibilities of the Symbian OS (e.g. endlessly expandable with software, games, etc.)

Things I don't like on the N73:

- The speed of the user interface. It's hard to describe, it's not slow as in sl-o-o-o-o-o-w to move around, it's more like pauses which are quite infuriating. e.g. opening up the camera lens to go into camera mode, taking a pic, viewing or composing messages... it's annoying.
- The user interface isn't laid out very intuitively, although due to the multitude of options, I guess it's not bad, but it all seems a bit of a mess. For example, give to phone to someone who's never used it before and ask them if they can remove the shortcut menu bar on the main screen. I had to resort to using the manual!
- The build quality seems to be not as high, for example, the lens cover feels loose from side to side.
- The battery cover can be mission impossible to get off
- The keys aren't laid out well or spaced out at all and are very small. i've not got large fingers, but even I have to resort to being careful when punching in numbers. And having the cancel in the bottom right hand corner is just wrong.
- Bluetooth issues (firmware bug), but should be fixed soon.
- No ability to easily update firmware yourself (unless you really know what you are doing)

I also must say that this is actually my third Nokia N73. The first one I got had 5 dead pixels! The second had what was like a spec of dust under the screen and I'll be damned if I have to open it up myself on a brand new phone to sort it out myself. This third one, the screen was fine, but the battery cover was very loose until I adjusted it. Now it feels ok, except the camera lens is kind of loose, from side to side, rather than up and down.

I have to say that I'm sticking with the N73, purely because of the Symbian OS and that I like the looks. However, the interface issues did make me wonder if I have made the right choice.

If there are any other questions, feel free to ask.

I don't know why people still think the N73's camera is inferior. I know I used to think that way but my thinking certainly changed after comparing my N73 with my friend's K800. The only place the K800 is good at is darker conditions.

Some pictures for comparison;

pretty much identical...i think the biggest difference is in the software. At day they're pretty much the same tho, night the k800 is better and the flash makes it even better.

get the n73. i just miss the flash on the k800i pretty much it. like what other threads are saying, the n73 can do the same and -more- because it's a smart phone not fixed like SE. dont get my wrong i like SE too but depends what you're really looking for. i was a SE fan and the n73 was my first nokia. and honestly i dont think im going back to SE anytime soon until they pick up the pace.

;8075028']it really depends if ur gonna use all the smartphone functions of the n73... if you dont know anything about symbian, and dont plan on installing 3rd party apps, and just use the phone for mp3 player and camera on top of basic phone functions, the k800 is more phone then you ever need... even though its not a walkman phone, the music player IS basically the walkman software but with a grey background and different text lol... camera quality is awesome, and the flash is an actual flash not some blinking white led light

the possibilities with s60 is almost endless, and ONCE they DO start making/converting old apps to s60 v3, the sky's the limit as they say... i havent used the n73, but ive used enough s60 v3 handsets that i can give a fair opinion... i have owned 2 k800s though and i have to say its an excellent phone, i just dont like the buldge at the back and its a little big but so is the n73 lol

NSU does not support N73 yet. And yes...there are some BT issues. It got better with the minor firmware upgrade (0.0.3 version) but there is suppose to be a major upgrade very soon.

^ oh yea, that was N93, soo many of em N-series, i keep loosing track of the model #'s...

care to list down those BT issues then, or better yet post it at BT forum.... its one thing saying there are BT issues, it is another thing actually listing em...

i did a mini-review link is in my sig...

both phones are good..depends what you prefer

i've had no major deal breaking hardware/software issues with either phone

general comments (all my opinion)
k has better build/layout (better use of materials, better feel, better keypad, joystick and hardkey placements (music keys for example))
camera's are comparable... se takes more "realistic" shots n73 takes more appealing shots IMO. flash is great for clubs and bars etc... nokia has to fix the "blue mist" on the n73
n73 kills in video recording
n73 screen is massive, k screen is better quality.. n73 has slight edge in direct sunlight
battery life i found comparable
UI speed and stablity goes to the k for now.
s60 has more potential for quality apps.. se can run similar apps in most cases but the java equvialant aren't always as good
n73 is quad+utms... k is either tri with 850/900 or tri+utms
cheaper and larger (at this point) external memory
n73 has a better (a lot) stock broswer
k has a2dp which is actually really good...

i would probably use the n73 if it had wifi... that's the big edge i see in s60 right now...otherwise i don't see much that s60 has to offer me as a user.. yes there's more apps to play which makes things more exciting but those apps aren't a necesscity for me.

otherwise overall i'm happier with the k.. cause of the build, UI, and multimedia (cam, music)

i mainly use it as a phone for sms, talking, music, camera, wap and msn.

in regards to BT issues.. never had any on the n73.. but nokia in general sometimes doesn't like my jx-10

There have been many users reporting that the N73 can have a problem maintaining a bluetooth connection over a couple of minutes - especially with version 0.0.1.

For me, when I do a succession of bluetooth transfers, it can just suddenly conk out and refuse to connect. Give it a little while and it will work again.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say [above] that I happen to think that the N73 might edge out the K800i in battery life stakes.

But you seem pretty vehement in your criticisms of my mini-comparison. No fanboys in here? It seems pretty childish to me just because I happen to list some negative points [of the N73].

I have to say though, in my opinion, I do agree with the poster above who says that for the average user who does not realise the power of the Symbian OS, the K800i would win every time - and I own a N73!
