I went to my post-op appt. recently and my dr told me he actually had to go INSIDE the disc to retrieve broken pieces ...? He said it was an extrmemly large rupture!! i could have told him that with the amount of pain i was in! It was a pain level 10++++ Comparable to childbirth pain if not worse! just wondering if this is normal...for them to go inside the disc itself? I actually just got copies of my surgery record and its interesting to read...guess he had a hard time getting to my nerve root cuz it was so inflamed in there.

Thanks and best wishes to all

I've read of that, some surgeons go into the disc space and take out extra, others don't like to, catch 22. They went in mine and took out some too, but from the size of the reherniation now he can't believe that much was screwed up inside there and that the disc is so bad that's y they sending me in for a fusion this time. I'm not happy lol not not happy.

How is your seroma???? is that what it was ? is it gone? Hows your recovery doing ??

Yes, it finally gone. took about 3 weeks, but gone and no draining involved. Sorry to hear about you going back in for a fusion...when is it? Don't be down...it couldn't get much worse, right? Didn't you just have a MicroD too? I am one month out from my 2nd one...Dr just said that since I still have issues with my back..I am a good candidate for an artificial disc replacement...not a fusion. So i need to wait at least 2-3 more months to see whay comes about with the pain. i still experience pain in my lower back...leg pain is better, but have residual nerve damage in my foot.
Hope all goes well for you. Good luck Hon!

Oh One more thing...can you tell me where to find more info on that? (going in disc space)I have looked everywhere! Thanks

REMOVED, it turns out that some go in and take some disc material out, others do minimal and try to just remove the herniated part, and even others take the whole nucleus of the disc out, but that is the least for patient satisfaction. I've read tons of the med abstracts and trials on the surgeries to see what the norm is, how they do it and what the reprocussions are in the studies for pain and reherniations.

The larger the defect in the disc the more likely chance of rehernations they say. And it takes the sciatic nerve (at the thickness of your thurab) 2" per month to heal, at which the sciatic nerve is 4 feet long, so give yourself time on your foot and other pains.

My doc didn't even talk about the artificial disc, just said no. But I have 3 discs that are degenerated and also some arthritis and some other stuff back there I dunno. I read on the discs, it's a big deal to get them in there that's for sure, ask how long (if it comes to that) that they last and when/if it would need replacement due to your age.

I just am so sick of this back crap and now a fusion? I knew it was coming, just hits harder on the mind when it comes out of the surgeons mouth versus what you know from reading and evaluating your own MRI prior to the appointment.

Glad that the seroma went away and didn't need draining! I swear we got the crap end of the stick in the luck department. lol

Is it called a sequestrectomy? I am confused. I know they remove the disc that has protruded on the outside, but didn't realize they could actually go INSIDE the disc itself? Wish I new the technical name for it LOL. It really isn't fun having back problems is it?
Yea, with an ADR you have to meet a certain criteria as I understand. he doesnt' want to put me through a fusion because of the disc he just did surgery on L5 S1 and becuase my L4 is degenerative and also bulding...he said at my age..the ADR would be better. I am wondering if my insurance would cover that too! Hmmm...something I didnt think to ask him. I am just happy he didn't send me home saying there was nothing else they could do...ya know.
Is your fusion scheduled yet?

Sequestotomy i think is just when they take the part of the disc that broke off what was sticking out of your spine, sequestered disc is the last stage of a herniated disc, after it oozes out it hangs there for awhile then it breaks off and is detached from the herniated/extruded part of your disc. I think just a discectomy is when they take out the disc material itself, but there's different methoRAB of doing it but it all falls under discectomy.
I'm not 100% but thats what I think it is?
