Hey Mike,
I hate to rain on your parade but......I have permanent nerve damage confirmed on an EMG and I only had nerve compression for 3 weeks from time of injury to surgery. So every case is different. I would follow up just as you are doing. Best of luck to you.

Can someon tell me with a herniated L5 S1 disc , with Mild Radiculopathy can and any perm damage happen to the Leg that is being affected?

Had the EMG test done and showed Increased Ins Act in a couple areas of my leg?

Thanks

The answer to your question is yes. Every person is different. But it is said that the longer the nerves are compressed, the higher change of permanent damage.

Then in my case, I have damage directly from the fusion surgery. It is very mild, but yet it does exist. It's a welcome trade off for me compared to how much pain I was before surgery.

Hope this helps you some.

I have had the same L5-S1 disc herniate. Both times required surgery. The second time the disc herniated, I had intense burning and about 10 days later was diagnosed by an MRI and EMG with a 100% complete foot drop. After the herniation, I had a nerve release surgery in my left knee then a tendon transfer in my foot of my posterior tibial tendon. I had to have a follow up surgery for my posterior tibial tendon transfer surgery. I still cannot move my foot much but at least it now moves a little by that I mean about 10 degrees so not much. My last EMG showed a tiny tiny bit of regeneration in my nerve but nothing significant enough that it will help my foot.

So yes, I have significant permanent damage. I would be safe saying MOST do not have the problems that I have/ had.

Hi,
I agree with Justone, yes it can be permanent. I have severe perm. damage to my left foot & leg from prolonged compression of the nerve. I am actaully disabled from the damage. I didn't get diagnosed for many years since my symptoms mimicked MS for awhile. So by the time surgery was done it was too late. I take many meRAB daily to help me deal with the nerve pain and it won't get any better they say.

I would urge you to do whats needed to help your problem within a good time frame. Now don't think that it will happen in a few months. It takes many many months of compression before it has the chance of becoming permanent so you don't have to rush into any decisions.

I would also get second opinions before doing any major treatments.

Good Luck!

God Bless

I agree as well. Seek treatments sooner rather than later. Also be sure to see a spinal surgeon and not mess with a general practioner for to long. Good luck.

Have you had a discogram? The reason I ask is because sometimes the disc that looks innocent can be just as much the culprit or even the worse culprit then the one that looks like the problem disc.

I often bring this up to people that Justoneofus (yep, I am telling your story again) had a discogram and the disc they thought was the problem was not the culprit. The innocent disc above was the problem disc and they did not know until they did this painful unpleasant test. The test is worth the pain and agony.

I only bring this up because the doctors are questioning the thigh pain.

Lastly, if you look up dermatone charts you will see the nerve pathways for the average person that go with each level in your back. The problem with this is that not every person shares the same pathway. Some of us are just lucky enough like me to be networked differently. This could be part of your problem too.

I hope that I did not add to much confusion to the mix and that I have helped you some. Please feel free to ask any questions. I love to chat. :D

No i have not yet had that test done ( discogram) i am going to spine doc in May with the films of the MRI so he can look at them.
It is getting to be a big pain though, Comp has cut my money down saying only 25% disabilty and to go back to work. But doctors don;t have no anwsers as well.
The doc that did the EMG test would not tell me much as to why the muscle in thigh is smaller and why the calf muscle is starting to show decreased muscle tone.
Thanks for all the input.

Mike

Thanks you all for your input, I am going to see nuero doc next Monday and i have seen a spinal doctor as well and he wants to read the MRI images himself so i am bringing them to him next week as well.

What gets me is that the weakness in leg thank goodness has not gotten any worse but no better as well, I feel like i lose my balance more now and have problems clirabing stairs.

Both doctors do not understand why i am having pain in upper front thigh and weakness. They say with a L5 S1 disc that should not be.

But about 5 days after being hurt the thigh has never been the same it is has now lost about a 1" are more in circumstance size even Doc given EMG test seen the thigh have a collaspe look to it and also said the lower claf muscle is losing muscle tone.
And i have been active , maybe not as much of course but not in bed all the time so not sure if from lack of movement but doctors do not seem to give many answers.

I am the QUEEN of thigh nurabness and leg weakness!!!!!!!

I did have a micro-d L5-S1 7 years ago. I had the surgery mostly due to leg weakness......severe, in BOTH legs. I had a paracentral large herniated disc.

Since my surgery my legs have become 100% strong again. But I still do have the right thigh nurabness/burning/somewhat painful if standing for more than 10 minutes or so. Sitting down relieves it. I can deal with that. My surgery was a success.

The weakness and thigh nurabness are DEFINITELY coming from your back. You have sensory and motor nerves in coming from the back. SounRAB like your motor nerves are compressed (weakness) and well as your sensory nerves (thigh nurabness)......like mine were.

I waited 15 months before I had surgery. I just woke up one day and said, give me the damn surgery! My legs were so weak that SOMETHING had to be done. If you are thinking of surgery, you will just KNOW when it is right for you. You will FEEL it. You will know.

Take care,
