personality, energetic, good with children? we'd really like a dog and the cocker spaniel is so adorable and i would really like to know a bit about them, i have a 17 month old daughter and we have 3 cats, id like to know how much they eat and how energetic they are and if they are very well behaved with children, and for their illnesses etc, thank you

the thing about spaniels, is they smell like spaniels. its a weird smell exclusive to spaniels, and im not keen on it. (i am being serious btw)

Seeing you are UK then the temperaments of cockers has changed quite a lot with the colours, and the block colours seem not to be so easy. It has been that way for some time now.

I have never seen a roan without a fantastic temperament, and they are very calm and loving, and I would say an ideal family dog, other than the grooming obviously.

Do your homework into the breeders and try and get someone close enough that you can view their dogs. That would be the best advice.

I have a cocker spaniel. We have never had any problems with her, other than her being too friendly! She always jumps up when people come into the house, but she doesn't do it to strangers, which is good. She always comes back when we call her, it was very easy to train her. She always eats her dog food, but she does beg for whatever we are eating, but I guess all dogs do that! She is very energetic, but she will calm down if you give her a lot of fuss and a dog chew. She is very well behaved with children, my 7-year-old cousin loves her! We also have a cat, and we have never had any trouble between the dog and the cat. We have two other dogs as well, and they all get along fine. She is the best behaved out of our three dogs (cocker spaniel, staffordshire bull terrier, jack russell).

They are very very lively especially as puppies (until they are at least 2 years old). they are also natural 'escape artists' so will drive you nuts finding ways to get out of the house and dig out of the garden. they are lovely dogs but i would not recommend getting one till your chidren are at least 7 or 8 years old and then you will need to have a very large garden, with fences bedded deep enough for them not to dig under and take them for a long walk twice a day .
