Anyone buy Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs on blu ray yet??

I got this to replace my very old Region 1 (USA) version.

Thought it was a good deal because of the DVD copy aswell so the kiRAB can have that upstairs.

However, I was a little bit disapointed. Not really sure what I expected in terms of it being cleaned up, etc.

One thing was that I'm just not used to watching stuff 4:3 any more. The black bars on the side put me off. Funny now how when something is not widescreen it annoys me yet when widescreen first came out, I hated it!
 
Have just read a review of this set over at Play. Poster was complaining bitterly, and rightly so, that the DVD is widescreen but that the Blu-ray is in 4.3.

Can anyone confirm this?
 
I watched it with the 'Disneyview' thing on yesterday where they fill the black bars on the side with especially designed artwork. I thought it was quite a good idea and quite well done.
 
Yeah but it will have the Disney View feature like with Pinocchio wont it? So you can have artwork similar to the film changing as the film goes on so you don't have to see big black bars at the sides. Also the blu ray does have some features not included on the 2 disc DVD release but i think most of them are online features.
 
Jeez, do people still not get it? Right, Blu-ray: Film is in ORIGINAL 4:3 ratio, as seen at the cinema's and in the ratio on the film stock, and enhanced so it fit's on the widescreens of today, naturally resulting in the black bars on either side, there is no other way around this and preserve the original shape of the presentation, and the picture is crisp, and the defects that can be seen are down to the fact these individual pictures were painted by hand, thus colours sometimes differ between frames, and the individual cells are hand placed over the backgrounRAB. picking up dirt in the process, and all this can be seen, film grain and all, and despite a clean up from restorers we are still seeing the original elements that make up the images.

The DVD: Using the same source as the Bluray, but for some reason NOT enhanced for widescreen tv's, so the image is stretched to fill the screen, who in their right mind would want this. Any fine details are blurred out or lost altogether in the downscaling of the resolution. The smaller image size is then artificially blown-up to fill the screens, and imperfections from this process become obvious, pixelation, especially on edges, loss of fine detail and desaturation of colour, all negative point, there are no positives to DVD over Bluray... obviously. Sorry if the technical points are a bit crappy here, I can only articulate to a certain degree, and make sense of what I'm trying to say, but hopefully this explains it to those who are disappointed. You shouldn't be disappointed in the bluray, it's the best you've ever seen it, and closer to the original source than ever, all positives.

Why would the Snow White dvd be enhanced for widescreen tv's when its in 4:3?

If the dvd really is in widescreen (which I doubt) then it will yet another title for Disney to replace.

If the dvd was encoded in 16:9 then the 4:3 image would still fill the centre of the screen but the side borders would be wasted quality.

Maybe the dvd whinger looked only at the menus which WILL be in 16:9 even though the film is 4:3.

Maybe this will be Disneys first cock up free Bluray after the replacements needed on both Sleeping Beauty and Pinnochio.

I'm delaying on Snow White for a few weeks because I bought both the others at release date and within weeks they were part of the BOGOF deals
 
I forgot to mention in my post above about Disney View.

You can either watch it with black bars either side or in Disney View which changes from scene to scene since it would not be feasibly to stretch the print to widescreen format. After all it was made about 16 years before widescreen even came out.

I found it alright to watch and not distracting at all. I would imagine some people would moan though, some moan about anything.
 
Oh, yeah, the BOGOF deals!!! Ah well, as I said it was an impulse buy.

I don't know why the DVD is presented so, but the image is clearly stretch to fit the screen, rather than cropped. I did just chuck in the dvd to check it, I didn't mess with any settings, though it should just go to default anyhow. Well, I'm more than pleased with the bluray, and that's what I bought it for.

Didn't know about the previous cock-up's. Are they now resolved as I want to get Pinocchio soon?

Looking forward to seeing the extras etc. I adore the queen and witch grimhilde (they are the same people btw lol- Grimhilde being the hag).

I could never understand why the witch's actual name was never mentioned in the movie. She's either know as 'the queen' or 'the hag'.

I will bet one of my kidneys that you have a setting wrong somewhere.
Snow White would only be presented in a stretched version if Disney have authored the dvd incorrectly and added WideScreenSwitching on the movie by mistake - and they did the reverse on the dvd supplied with the SB Bluray and MISSED the WSS so the widescreen film was compressed and required manual altering of the tv's ratio but the lack of WSS made it impossible to view the dvd undistorted on a 4:3 tv.

However I think you have your settings wrong on either your tv or your player.
If you have any other 4:3 disc try that - if thats stretched too your setup is wrong - if its not then the disc IS faulty


Disney View is something also included on the Pinocchio disc.
As with SW the film is in 4:3 so for those who don't like the black sidebars they have added paintings newly done for the release into those bars - stupid idea if you ask me.

The Pinocchio Bluray has a fault on Disc 2 where foreign subtitles pop up in the documentary even when subs are set on the disc menu to NONE.
Corrected discs are available from Disney but whether they are in the shops yet I dont know.

As I mentioned before , the WSS was missing on the dvd included in the SB Bluray.
Rather than replace tens of thousanRAB of discs the 3 disc version was swiftly deleted and the current version has no dvd included
 
I'll check it out properly tomorrow, it was just a quick viewing, so sorry if I mislead anyone, but I'll come back on it tomorrow at some point. But, as far as I'm concerned, I'll only use the bluray anyhow, and by the sounRAB of it, I'll skip the Disney view mode!:D
 
Neither are in widescreen. They are both 4:3 but there is a special option called Disney View so that rather than staring at black bars it will put nice artwork there that fits with the film. If you are watching on a widescreen TV and you can't see any kind of bars at the side then there is a setting wrong on your TV.
