I saw it today in Tesco......packaging didn't look nearly as nice or as shiny as the Pinocchio one and i just didn't feel like i needed to have it. If i had bought it it would have just been for the sake of it being Disney and the fact that i missed out on the original DVD version. Is it any good?

Yeah, I know they're in 4:3, the bluray showed the black sides, as expected, but when I popped the DVD in straight after, without changing settings, the picture was stretched to fill the whole screen, seemed a bit strange as I didn't change any settings, and I do know my TV, and PS3!

Just bought it a couple of hours ago at Morrisons, a total impulse buy, though I did plan on getting it eventually, just not so soon;)

I've never actually seen the film, but from what I've seen and know about it, I really can't wait to see it. I've seen some screenshots... it looks amazing.

I'm yet to get Pinocchio, even though that is my very favourite Disney film (of those I've seen, which is most of 'em I think).

Hello all

I watched it tonight, since it was delivered this morning courtesy of Amazon. There are three discs available in the box set.

Already had a look at some of the extras before I even watched the film, and they are pretty good too. Shows how much work actually went into making this classic film, and remember it was made between 1935-1937. No CGIs in them days, all hand made.

As for the print itself, its very good, although some of the detail does look a little soft at times due to the age of the film. But it is still great to look at.

Now for the best bit. There are 3 soundtracks available; PCM Stereo; 5:1 Dolby and 7:1 Surround which is what I used, and its awesome. For an oldie film, the sound is wonderful!!!!! You can hear every little sound, and the dialogue is so clear on my 7:1 surround system using the 7 Channel Stereo which drives the soundtrack through 8 speakers.

And yes, its also a weepie, especially in the final scenes.

The kiRAB will love it. And parents will too, best to tell mum to keep some tissues handy as well in case she sheRAB a few tears.

Blu-Ray Box set of the year.

SounRAB like you have the upscaler on your PS3 set to "FULL".

If the disc is faulty any other 4:3 disc will display correctly.

You should have the PS3 upscaler set to NORMAL.

Bluray disc HD content is always 16:9 so the sidebars are part of the picture.

A dvd is always 4:3 but the disc will have a 16:9 flag to tell the player to stretch the image into widescreen if that is what is required - and for Snow White it isn't

If your PS3 is set to FULL it will play ALL dvd's stretched to 16:9 regardless of whether the widescreen flag is on the disc.

Disney normally present the disc menus as 16:9 even if the film is 4:3.

Can you just try another 4:3 dvd to put us out of our misery?

You must have some vintage tv shows that are 4:3

Disney make the best Blu-rays! This, of course, includes Pixar and ABC television shows like Lost, which are all owned by Disney. They always seem to have the best picture, sound and extras. I know this is a well-known fact among anyone who knows anything about the technical side of Blu-rays.

I rented Pinocchio and it was amazing! Of course I've seen it loaRAB of times, not for years though, but it was almost like seeing a completely new film. It's great to see Disney treating it's classics so well AND going back to hand-drawn animation, which they have done with The Princess and the Frog. I can't wait to check out Snow White and next year Beauty and the Beast, which should look awesome with it being much newer.

Btw I seem to remember reading somewhere that Beauty and the Beast will be coming next autumn and NOT spring, that it will be Dumbo in spring.

Yep all sounRAB about right, I think the PS3 is on Fullscreen upscaler. I rarlely watch 4:3 DVD's in the lounge, as you say I do have plenty of vintage TV and stuff in 4:3 but usually watch it in the bedroom. Anyway, I will run the DVD again with new setting, and put you out of any misery:D

Prompted by the discussions re the Snow White ratio question, I wondered if anyone had got this new release?

On the second disc, the film has been presented in something called 'Smilebox', which appears to be an attempt to give the film that 'wraparound' experience that you would have experienced if you had watched the film in a cinema in original Cinerama.

The film was made in the Cinerama process, which means it was filmed using 3 seperate cameras, and the three images are joined together. Obviously you get a far larger picture, though one downside is that the joins between the three frames of film were often very visible during daylight scenes.

The recent DVD's and the Blu Ray have cleaned this 'join' up somewhat, so it is less distracting.

But the 'Smilebox' presentation is...rather strange. I can see what they were trying to do, and indeed it does give the effect of being in a cinema with the huge screens wrapped around you...but it does it slightly too well, because it's as though you were sitting in the front row, so items in the foreground appear huge, and those in the background look miles away. It's a kind of 'warping' effect, in a way.

Also, if you were to be unkind, you could just say that the picture just looks like they have taken two bites out of the top and bottom of the screen, and it just looks like a convex shaped picture and is just unnatural.

It is an interesting presentation, but I am not sure it entirely works.

There is a documentary on the disc on the process, so I will check that out too.

I've just ordered the normal edition of SW&TSD as i don't have a blu-ray player, and the normal edition is meant to be more digitlisised (think that's the word) for better quality.

I got it from play.com where you get some free carRAB with images on or something. Takes me back to last year when i ordered Sleeping beauty! I believe Beauty and the beast is next year.

EDIT: B&TB is due for spring, however i think that site is the US version and therefore a month in front.

There is an ad in the booklet of Snow White saying B&tB is due Autumn 2010.

The DVD version will be the same as the BR version, just lower res, i.e no HD picture and 7.1 sound. I would think!

Yeah i hope so. I really want to watch it in Good Quality- which i know it will be and i noticed the difference with sleeping beauty last year.

Do you have the normal version of SW or the blu-ray? My 'normal' edition should be here saturday (bloody post strike!)

Hello Ted

I agree with you about the silly screen effect on How The West Was Won. I had a quick look at it and didnt like it to be honest, so just watched the movie in normal widescreen which looked great on my Sony 40 inch.

Nah, just standard box in card sleeve, nice though, as are most classic Disney stuff.

Oh, actually it did have a little charm bracelet in it with several girl charactes, Snow White, Belle, Areal etc. No mention of it on the box, so a surprise, though I don't think it would suit me though.

Well, finally got 'round to seeing the bluray, absolutely incredible, it was an absolute joy, and having never seen it added to it also, fantastic stuff. And as for the DVD screen ration, I sorted my PS3 out to 'normal' on DVD upscaling size, and the 4:3 ratio is restored. Also went through some of the extras, there are so many it's crazy!
