I'm working on the planning of it, costs, papers, routes, time, etc. I've taken the first step, but I need some encouragement. I don't expect you to detail your routes or plans for me, but what are reliable sites or sites you found helpfull in planning? And what was the total cost? Were you fluent in the countries language?

Yes. My late grandfather did during world war 2 in Burma. He killed a lot of Japanese back then and loved every minute of it.

OK,

I went to SE Asia in 04/05.

Started in Bali, then Java with a local friend who drove me around the island for a month. Went to Sumatra after that for a quick tour.
Then I headed to Hong Kong for a week where I took a pick of a hostel and met some great people one of which I ended going to Thailand with.
We got to Bangkok and looked for accommodation. Went walk about that night and met 2 random people. 4 of us travelled down to the island of Kho Pagnan (full moon party) on a train. We separated. I went back to Bangkok did a couple of tours in the area and went south to Pattaya, then across to Phuket and then back north to Chiang Mai. From there I went to Laos via a trip on the Mekong. In Laos I stayed in Vangvieng at a Farm by the river. Met more amazing people and travelled down the country with them to Si Phan Don (1000 islands) which is a magical place. Then we crossed over to Vietnam and travelled up to Sapa and the Halong Bay and down to Hoi An, Hue, Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh.

I then travelled to China with a friend and saw Beijing, Shanghai and Xian (terracotta warriors) and that was it.

Didn't go to Cambodia and Myanmar/Burma which I sort of regret, but not really as the extra time I spent at various places in lieu of going to new places, was priceless.

I had already been to Japan and Korea but would have done it then, had I not.

Favourite places for me were: the country of Laos (untouched and natural) particularly north of Luang Prabang and vangvieng ; and Hoi An in Vietnam. In both of these places I met some amazing fellow travellers and developed solid life long friendships. But the settings, the fellow travellers and especially the locals in Hoi An and Vanvieng were unforgettable.

I went alone, didn't stick to a schedule, had no itinerary except a return ticket home and, fortunately, had lots of time.

Enjoy and take your time. If you feel it in one place, stay as long as you can. Take it all in and be open to the locals and other travellers.
