Im looking at the Hardrock series that are $390 to $500.

Sort answer - not likely.
You should definitely try. Ask for the owner. He's likely the only one that will make such a decision. And he's the only one that'll be feeling the pinch of his creditors.
The shop may have a last year's model in stock you can get a deal on, but for this year's model, you may get $10 off, if anything. The profit margins on lower end mt bikes are thin to begin with (yes, Hardrocks are Specialized's lower end). Where you have bargaining power is with accessories. Have him "throw in" a water bottle and cage. Get a discount on a mini pump and/or helmet. How about an under saddle bag, multi tool, tube and patch kit. Suggest upgrading a part - rear derailleur, for example for a nominal fee.

You won't get it if you don't ask, offer cash if you can, and be prepared to call him on his hard line by saying 'thanks anyway' and leaving. If you get out the door, he's as low as he's willing to go.

Good luck.
