I had surgery for a large herniation L4-5 about 6 years ago and was having trouble standing for very long, months after surgery. The neuro told me before surgery that I had stenosis but did not know if it was caused by the herniation or not. I tried going back to work 4 times and had to give up because I could not take standing for long. I now also have problems if I sit too long. Everything I have read talks about problems standing and walking, but I also have probems if I sit too long. Can anybody else relate to this or know where I can get info. on this? I will be going to a neuro. soon but like any info I can learn myself in the meantime. Thankyou

I have EXACTLY what you have. I had a lami 20 yrs ago and it really never worked as my wife has been tying my shoes ever since. I started having problems in August and went for an MRI. It said that I had moderate neuroforaminal stenosis as well as broad based disc osteophyte complex and facet arthrpathy. It has gotten progressively worse since and I am seeing a NEURO next week. When I stand up getting out of bed I am ok for no more than 5 minutes then Bang! its killing me. I do get immediate relief when I sit, but if I sit for too long then I get Sciatica down my leg. I am not sure that I dont have both stenosis and a ruptured disc as well. I am 56 yrs old and I also have a torn meniscus in my knee as well as severe sleep apnea. I am at the point now where I may just apply for disability from Social Security. The pay cut would be large but I cant keep going like this.

As time went on for me, I started having trouble sitting in certain positions. I could not sit leaning back or straight....but if I bent forward more at the waist while sitting, then I got some relief. I had central canal stenosis and at one point also had some disc herniations. With the herniations, it didnt matter how I sat, it was severe, nauseating pain. Do you know what type of stenosis you have?

Where can I find out more about this X stop procedure?? I've never heard about it and it sounRAB interesting....

Well, I searched on the Internet and found info about the X-stop, but I couldn't find a list of doctors that are trained in the procedure. How do you find out who in your area (Wisconsin for me) is using the X-stop? It sounRAB really terrific!!

My doctor and his brother (the Saal brothers) invented the X-stop. I saw a surgeon in SF who specializes in the procedure. He said it is intended for only the most severe cases where you can barely walk. Since then Dr. Saal performed a minimally invasive discectomy. I walked out of that an hour later feeling 90% better. No incision at all. Dr Saal is in San Jose, CA.
