Any thoughts (positive or negative) on Tracfone?

Hi everyone,

Does anyone here have any experience with Tracfone (both the company and the phones they sell)? Would you recommend them? Any rants? I am disabled and looking for a cheap and reliable phone, and wonder if this might be a good way to avoid fees.

All thoughs, ideas, suggestions, and comments are welcomed.

Hey Newbieguy2, can you give me some idea of how you plan to use your cell phone? Are you looking for a phone that basically makes calls or do you need something more? Do you plan to have it for light, emergency communcation while you are away from your landline or are you planning to make it your primary phone? Do you expect to be a light user or do you plan to have the thing glued to your ear?

You mention a disability and in another post you describe difficulty using an LG C1500. If you can find one, a Sagem VS1 or VS2 may be just the phone for you. It is a large bar phone with a big display and big, nicely spaced keys. Unfortunately, these models were only available in Europe on Vodafone. If you can't find the thing, you may want to consider a cheap, basically disposable candybar like the Nokia 1100 or 1110. It's as basic a communication tool as you get. Other manufacturers make similar models as well.

Regarding Tracfones, the basic consumer for Tracfone is someone who plans to use it a little, keep it for a sense of security and not be bogged down by monthly bills. It is a pre-pay arrangement. As such, the per minute charges are much more expensive than a plan, but if you only talk 30 minutes or so a month it may be just for you. If you plan to use it more than an hour a month, skip it and get a regular plan.

If you need a phone to be able to call 911, ask a friend to give you an old GSM or CDMA phone that is no longer in service. If you keep it charged, you can use it to dial 911 since those calls must go through, even without a service plan. It's a federal US law.

Tango Uniform.
