Any suggestions on how to build a better portfolio being an amateur photographer?

I am an amateur digital photographer. I am trying to find more people for shoots to build my portfolio. I do not want to photograph individuals without their permission as that would be rude. So I am trying to find ways to "advertise" for people to shoot pictures of. I am not looking to take pictures of artificial beauty meaning the made up model types. I want to photograph people from "all" walks of life. I want to show diversity and people as they really are in my photographs.
 
ask your friends, family, ask them to ask there friensds for you.

or you could do the rude thing and just take pics of strangers. its not actually that rude.
