Any sports//exercise that helps with upper back pain?

A few years ago, my doctor advised me to do certain sports that would help me correct and maintain my spinal alignment (I was diagnosed with mild scoliosis) by strengthening the muscles surrounding/supporting the spine.

He recommended swimming; my chiropractor recommended martial arts, particularly in staff work.

Are there any sports that help strengthen those muscles? I want to do a sport or some kind of activity so that I stay motivated and obligated to go to classes. Otherwise, I get lazy and give up if I try to "force" myself to do something. So, doing exercises alone would probably be a failure.

I'm currently doing Fencing, Tai Chi, and Tennis. I'm also looking forward to a Mixed Martial Arts direction and possibly Golf when I go to college. Do those serve the same function?
