Any short cuts for renewing my (full-of-grass) perennial garden?

It's been a few seasons of neglect and I am overwhelmed with grass. I suspect it would be best to dig everything up , clean up and replant, but isn't there an easier way?

It's a pretty large border, not a petty little row of daisies and daffodils.
