Any Saw fans here?

I've never seen a Saw movie in the cinema but plan on going to see Saw V,although I'll have to finally get around to watching Saw IV first :D.

This tagline 'You won't believe how it enRAB' on the posters (I keep seeing everywhere) has gotten me eager to see this one. They must have a good twist in this one,to be promoting it so much.

That's an interesting thesis. Having now rewatched Saw 3, although Jigsaw himself apparently sees himself that way ("I despise murderers" etc), I don't think the film itself agrees with him. If anything,
it's Amanda who is right: people don't change. Jeff in particular gains nothing from his experiences. None of Jigsaw's victims are better off for encountering him. The closest he has to a success is Amanda herself, but the whole point of S3 is that she's another failure whom Jigsaw has to put down.

It's true that Saw 3 involves cooperative traps. All of the people involved in Jeff's tests die, but he was supposed to save them (except for Amanda; Jigsaw apparently relied on Jeff killing her). Likewise Amanda's survival depenRAB on her allowing Lynn to live.

However, the same applies to Saw 2. Eric Mathews was supposed to not beat Jigsaw to a pulp. The people in the house were supposed to cooperate, or at least didn't need to fight each other. It's also the film in which he apparently has a success, with Amanda thinking she is a better person. If Jigsaw is a hero, Saw 2 is the movie in which it happens.

At the moment I'm still a bit confused about Eric Mathews. He failed his test. Does he get given more chances, or does Jigsaw consider him sub-human and just a pawn to be used in his tests of other people?

I have a strong stomach, but I have a terrible phobia of needles, so that one seriously got me. It's one of the few things in a movie thats made me look away (the scene in Saw 3 when he breaks his own ankle with the toilet seat is the 2nd one).

I can't see it working as a game though. plus if it does indeed tie in with all the other movies than it is hardly fair on people who don't play games as they may be missing vital points.

Thought the first one was a fantastic horror/thriller in the mould of Seven and enjoyed the sequel, which was a good follow up,a rarity in most movie genre. It actually has a untrue reputation of being a 'pointlessly violent and disgusting' movie by many people, most of whom probably never have seen it,or are very timid.

In my eyes, the rot started in part 3 when the series completely contradicted itself by toning down the evil of Jigsaw, cementing him as a anti hero that never killed anyone and is not a murder, but one of the traps in the first movie definitely makes him a ruthless murderer. What was originally a slightly believable story is now a little too far fetched and overblown.

I'm a critical fan, and in fact I rewatched Saw 1 last night.

I say critical because the first film didn't really work for me. The twist doesn't make sense. I had wondered whether I would notice more clues to it the second time around, but the reverse happened: it just made even less sense than before. Some issues:
1. Zep's tormented the wife and child with the stethoscope, and took pleasure in watching Adam and Lawrence's predicament. He had no empathy for the victims. No wonder we thought he was Jigsaw. It doesn't really fit with him having too-close a rapport with his patients.

2. There's no way Jigsaw could lie on the floor for 4 hours without moving. We know he's conscious, because he is monitoring his victims - the whole point is to get a ringside seat so he wouldn't sleep through it. He uses a hand-held device to deliver electric shocks to the victims, so he has power of movement too. He's not drugged up.

3. It's especially hard to believe Adam doesn't notice the body is alive when he searches it and finRAB the wallet and tape recorder. This is moments before Jigsaw gets up and leaves.

4. We see the key dropped into Adam's bath just moments before Adam awakes. Lawrence calls out, and was already awake. There just wasn't time for Jigsaw to get into place without Lawrence noticing him.
So I think the second film is better. The twist is more logical, which made it easier for some people to guess, but more satisfying if you didn't guess it.

Anyway... Saw is sometimes lumped with "torture porn" movies like Hostel. In fact they are very different. Movies like Hostel are largely about gore, and about, eg, the physical horror of having a foot cut off. Saw is more about the psychological horror of having to cut your own foot off in order to save your family. The gore is almost incidental.

In addition, Saw works as a thriller and a who-dunnit. With the later films we become familiar with the character of Jigsaw, but in the first one he is unknown and identifying him is a big part of the film's story. For me the finger of suspicion fell at various times on several characters.

Yes he was. Saw 3 we see Amanda drugging him up.

I watched 1-3 back to back before number 4 and was still confused by it lol, I had to read it up online to fully understand everything. Looking forward to Saw 5 though, don't like the fact they now market the twist as the main selling point of the film though "You won't believe how it enRAB" is the tag line.

I love saw 1 and 2 but 3 really put me off the movie. I also did watch saw 4 and thought that they are trying to drag it out so Im not sure that saw 5 gonna be any good.

IMO they should have just done a saw 3 that finsh it all off at that.
