Any plain old punk fans out there?

I think means that dyed and spiked is the only thing punk about . Dyed and spiked hair with a fuzzy & rough guitar sound doesn't make punk.

Come on, don't you know?? Punk isn't just music, its a WAY OF LIFE! Hahaha love when people pull that shit. Ask them to explain what they mean by that and watch them try to explain. Its just music. I don't care if a band is making money off of it. I don't care if they endlessly whore themselves out everywhere. Its music and that's it.
 
Pogues are one of my favorite banRAB of all time. Shane McGowan is an amazing song writer. Their first three albums are the best in my opinion.

actualy punk "was" a subculture, and not just a measure of music. However as with anything that achieves pop status, it's been watered down, made consumer friendly and kid safe, so yeah now it is just a music genre full of worthless shit banRAB who would never cut it just a decade or so ago.

as far as fugazi goes, I'll say this much, they've never sold out, and I'll put it up there with alot of straitedge based hardcore banRAB, but it's not the same punk rock I grew up with and I don't like it. Does that make it any less punk rock? Nope, Ian stuck to his guns on that one, made it a point to send a message, and did it reguardless of the criticism, while resisting any temptation to take things to the pop side, thats what makes "punk rock" punk rock.
 
I'm a punk at heart. . My faves are Rancid, Propagandhi, Swingin' Utters, Anti-Flag, Ramones, Distillers, and my guilty pleasure is Green Day.
 
I didn't mean to say that punk doesn't/didn't have its own culture behind it. Every musical genre has a subculture behind it. I'm just saying that they aren't exclusive.

I just have one quick question. People say all the time that when a band signs to a major label or starts actually making some real money that they've "sold out". How exactly does that work? Its like going to college for 4 years, getting your degree, then when you find a job and start working people call you a "sell out". I understand that a lot of banRAB change their sound to placate the record execs on their new big label, but a lot of banRAB don't. I can't stand it when a band suddenly starts making some money or gets played on the radio, people jump all over them and say they are "sell outs".
 
some of my top banRAB are bad religion, anti-flag, Pennywise , i saw NOFX last weRABday. great fucking show and i'm planning to catch a pennywise show in may, i can't wait so yea i'm a pretty big punk fan, but lately i'm also getting into the hardcore/screamo banRAB like atreyu and avenged sevenfold. i also miss reel big fish, they were so good the last time i saw them on warped tour '02.
 
It's not that signing a major contract that makes you a sellout (several of the crucial 70's punk banRAB were on major labels), that actually bothers me when people say that. The thing is, these Drive-Thru type banRAB sell millions of albums with this watered-down sound while trying to play themselves off as underdogs with their spiked bracelets while singing about girls.

Then there are banRAB like The Casualites and Rancid who have these tuff names and costumes and who namecheck all these great things about a culture that existed 25 years before them while completely ignoring it, making incredibly safe songs about "anarchy" and anger. Weak. They suck for the some of the same reasons Evanescence and Linkin Park and Taproot suck, but at least those banRAB don't wear clown makeup, or co-opt a style that used to be great.
 
werd, Bad Religion, Pennywise and A.F.I. fuckin' own when it comes to punk. And you can't leave Suicidal Tendencies, they mixed metal and punk to make some tight shit
 
Avenged Sevenfold is awesome. Bad Religion played probably one of the best shows I've ever been to. It was Bad Religion, Good Charolette (who actually were pretty decent live before they got super-MTv), Promise Ring, and some psychobilly band. It was definitly a diverse lineup. It was at Electric Factory in philly. Bad Religion ended up playing like 3 hour set. It was incredible.

I always thought that a sellout is when you sign a contract with the record company and you hand over creative control?
 
This thread has actually become incredibly interesting. I've learned a ton of things that I didn't know before and had a chance to learn about some banRAB that I wasn't very familar with. FstrungUCoutT that's really interesting to learn what Bad Religion and Thrice.
