Nothing visual will be PHP, unless you are using PHP to grab the photographs.
jQuery is the language to use when making a lightbox.
The site to learn jQuery at is http://www.jquery.com
However, there are lightbox scripts that can be found on google. Just takes a little typing to find them =]
dynamicdrive.com may also have a regular javascript one.
