Any other phones with a touch-screen as good as the iPhone?

I've had an iPhone in the past and was very pleased with the quality of the touch-screen. Very sensitive and easy to type e-mails on.

For other reasons, I switched from the iPhone to the HTC Magic. Compared to the iPhone, the Magic's touch-screen was less sensitive and typing text on it was a painful experience.

In terms of sensitivity and ease of use in typing lots of text (like e-mails), which smartphones have touch-screens that are as good as the iPhone's?

I would just be able to tell you the Verizon Wireless ones, and since I SUCK at virtual keyboards, These 2 happen to work VERY well for me and they are the Motorol Droid & the HTC Droid Eris.. Epic touch screen and that is compared to my iPod Touch.

No. There was a study that analyzed sensitivity and precision of a touchscreen. I don't know how they do it, but they express the results through a matrix of lines drawn upon the surface.

The iPhone touchscreen beats all. Not much of any difference among different models of HTC.

I was never a fan of touchscreens but the Droid has made a believer of me, outstanding phone, I find myself using the touchscreen all the time and rarely use the slide out keyboard

i would say the iphone is a tad better than droid.
oh well, iphone's main selling point is the touch screen, if they don't excel in it, then there is no point in having a iphone

That was the good point of going touch screen only, it forced them to excel. Other OSes had the keyboard as a fall back, so never needed to push it quite as much.

nobody mentioned the nexus one.

any phone with capacitive screen should match the iphone, since it also uses capacitive screen. resistive screens, which most touch phones use, is not quite as good.

Thanks for all the advice.

As I mentioned in the OP, I have had both an iPhone and an HTC Magic. The Magic's touch-screen was a toy compared to the iPhone's. Typing quickly and accurately was close to impossible.

So though they both have capacitive screens, I think screen size and other electronic factors have a huge effect on their real-world usability, when it comes to typing.

My only experience with typing on a touch screen has been with the Storm. I can't say much about the screen sensitivity on the Storm vs others, but being able to type in portrait mode with sure type is awesome, to me. I see folks on other phones and they still have full QWERTY in portrait mode. Most of the communication I do on the phone is thru typing, so being able to hit the right keys and do it with one hand, is huge for me.
Is there any other pure touchscreens out there that excell at this?
