Any Other New C109R Owners??

I can't help wondering if what you are hearing is actually the power pulse of the engine and not the higher pinging of detonation. While riding mine I have noticed some detonation when it was warmer out and I was lugging it.This a alot higher pinging than a lower thumping and it was when I had to put a lower octane in it temporarily. But it does have a more noticeable power pulse that my C50t had. I think you may be worrying over nothing. If in doubt take it to the dealer and have the mechanic ride it and check it out.

thanks everybody.... The noise isn't a thump, but is a knock. It happens only in 4th and 5th gears when loading the engine. I'm running 93 octane. It's at the dealer now. They said yesterday that they couldn't hear any noise. They also said that the timing can't be adjusted. I'll ask if they can adjust, enrichen fuel mixture. If not I guess I'll try a FI Controller... Needless to say, I'm quite disappointed. But,, it does ride good..SkipD

Hey Guys, Back again........ I decided that I'm going to pick up my bike today.........IIIIIIII will do my first service which is due in about 150 miles.......At that time I'll look at my plugs and decide if I'm going to a colder plug and possibly installing the Bully FI Controller. Skip D

I have 3200 miles on mine the pinging is there but is very low. only 800 more miles until maintenance then ill have them look into it. bike runs great the pinging is really not too bad. If I just cruse in 4th or 5th for a min or so then hit it there pinging is not present. so its something with the fuel/air mixture.
I will get a PCIII and pipes installed probably when spring comes =(((((((.

I went to pick my bike up at the dealer today. They said a third guy rode it and and none of them can hear (supposedly) anything "abnormal". Lately it has been 90-93 degrees out. Today when I picked up my bike, a cold front was going thru and the temp was about 82ish.... As I rode I discovered that the knocking was all but gone. I'm confident that there was very little if any surging. I think the reduced temp allowed the engine to run cooler, which almost eliminated the detonation. What do you think.....I also think that if that's true then richening the bottom of the cruise would probably fix me right up. I think I need to make the low cruise richer, which looks like what I need because I detonate at partial increasing load in the cruise and surging during HOT weather. I ordered the Bully FI Controller today also. He shipped it about 4 hours after I ordered it. Can't wait to get it. Later Skip D

Oh I forgot to say,,,,,MMMAANNN!!!!!! that thing rides good.

I installed the Bully FI Controller and it made a big difference. I don't don't have a lot of time on it yet, but so far I can do a 5th gear roll on at about 48ish-49ish with no detonation and the surge is gone as well. I'll keep you informed as I continue to figure out the Bully.

I need to get a throttle lock as well. I had one on my C90...I should have taken it off prior to trade in but I forgot all about it.....Let me know how you like that "break-away". I have never used one of those....Skip D

I met a guy in Vancouver BC this year on an M109 and he had just put a breakaway on his bike and he absolutely loved it.
I had a throttle lock on my old Shadow and miss it ALOT.
I'll be going the breakaway route soon too.

Hey Guys, So far the Bully FI Controller is working great. I have since cut it down to about 3. Also did my first service. Went with Repsol synthetic blend (partial) for oil. Used regular dino stuff in the diff. I'll run that for about 1000 miles and then change to synthetic. Also got some iso grips on the way..Has anybody located a luggage rack yet???

Wow this is the thread that keeps on givin. Got my C109 in July and I love it.

Have experienced too much engine knock using 91 octane fuel (highest I can get). Put cooler plugs (#9) and not much difference. I am encouraged by Skip D's experience with the bully controller. Think it is time to try it. Octane boost works to get rid of the knock, but I am pretty sure it is not good for the FI system.

Glad to see lots of C109 owners!

Hey AL109, Congrats on your 109. Did you get the 109R or RT? Man, it is unbelievable how such a large bike can be so agile, isn't it? I have the RT and it rides good, looks good, and butloads of power. I'm curious, with the octane booster added, do you have any idea what the octane level of your fuel was? I am glad to hear about your plugs(well not for you). I was going to try that when I did my first plug change. Now I know it probably wouldn't do anything.
Right now I'm still playing with the bully. I have it set on 3 or 3.5. I am currently measuring mileage on this tank. Looks like I'll be hitting the 40ish mark. So I'll probably stay there. My rt really likes to be rich (6-7ish on the Bully). But it burns fuel up quick like that. At 3ish, the knocking is there but no where as bad and I think I can live with it there. Especially if it ends up getting 40+ MPG.
I am a new guy here myself, but welcome and good luck with your 109.
Stay safe. Later Skip D

I got the C109R model and did this to it...

Originally I wanted the RT but they did not have one in my area.
I decided to buy the R and add the rest, and I am glad I did because the hard bags are really nice, and they lock.

I was looking at buying a HD Road King, but the performance is no where near the C109, in almost every possible way. Not to mention the price difference, and that the dealers want more than MSRP for a HD.

Been very happy with the C109R ! :bluethum:

I got the bags from Champion Side Cars. I had to take the bike down and leave it for a couple of days so they could make the hardware, as they did not have it yet.

The bags are great, but the paint job they did has developed 2 cracks. I think it is because the bags were painted too soon after fabrication for the fiberglass to dry properly. Hard for me to recommend them based on this. Also they are pricey. Even so, I am happy with them, because the shape is a near perfect match for this bike. I looked for a long time to find the right hardbags, and these are the best shape out there for the C109.

Great looking bike. Love the look of massive engine, the air filter, the rear fender. The hard bags and the windshield nicely integrate with the rest of the bike.

109s are XXL for me but admire them a lot, especially the C class.

Those bags do look sweet. Have any of you guys tried the timing retard eliminator from GMAN yet? I am seriously thinking about it in the near future.
Later on, Ride Safe.
