Any Lawyers, or Law School students in here?

I am writing a short story for a creative writing class and my main character works at a law firm; however, I don't know much about what lawyers do from day to day. So I am hoping someone can help me out a little.

If an attorney had paper work scattered across her desk, what would be the content of that paper work? ( I dont need details, just a general idea).

If a boss were to complain to one of their attorneys about a deadline, what would that deadline be? (Meaning, would that deadline be a court date? Or something else?)

And what would the attorney have to complete before that deadline? (what sort of work- paperwork, evidence collection? Etc?).

Who would be the attorneys boss (like what title would they have? "CEO", "manager", etc).

I don't need detailed answers, just give me a general idea and maybe an example and Ill just use that in my paper. Thank you so much!
Sorry, I neglected to tell you what type of attorney Im creating, he/she is going to be involved in criminal cases? I suppose thats what they're called. Either way, he/shes the one who puts the bad guys aways. Like if someone is accused of committing a crime, he/she is gonna be the one that fights to put that person away.
Hope that clarifies things. Sorry, I really don't know much about Law, I'm pre med haha.

LOL. Oh lawyers are something else.

Yes a typical law office is going to be cover in books, and papers. Depending on what time of law they practice. I am familiar with medical malpractice. Therefore, spread all over our office will be pleading (which are legal documents that are filed with the court), along with medical research, medical records, and pictures.

General rule of thumb, you keep documents for about 7 years. many time current cases may be similar to one you have already settled or tired, and those documents can be very helpful.

Being a lawyer can be very very stressful. Again depending on the type of law they practice. Deadlines are set by the courts. And if you have something due, you usually have a day or two to respond to the opposing counsel.

Punching walls, and throwing fits are not uncommon in a high stress environment.

Especially around trial. You work non-stop. Making slide shoes to help your case, finding experts, researching opposing experts. There is a lot of "detective work" that goes into trial, you need to prove why not to believe the other side.

Worst case scenario, around trial the lawyers will sleep in the office trying to work non-stop. Looking and acting frazzled. However, once in the court room a sense of calm and composure takes it's course.

The "boss" of a law firm is usually a Senior partner who is also a lawyer. He or She will have financial responsibility for the firm. But they also have an office manger who is their right hang man/women, and makes sure the other partners, and associate attorneys are getting what they need and doing their job.

Its complex, its crazy, but it can be worth it.
