Any info on Consumer Research Co.? It's one of those 'Mystery Shopper Co.s'.?

I received in the mail this morning a check for almost $4000, to cash only after completing and faxing their acceptance form back to them. Funny thing is, the check isn't from them, it's from a construction company in California. Is this a scam or is it real?
