Any ideas on how to make my art book look good?

I'm doing an A2 Fine Art course in college, and my topic is architecture. The thing is, there's a lot of plain spaces like between the photos and I have no idea where annotations should go. The photos of buildings vary in colour as well so I can't really use the same colours for the backgrounds.
Has anyone got any ideas on layout, colours etc.? My teacher says it lacks sophistication, I'm really stuck on how to make it better?!

Also, I have to make it keep with the theme of architecture and the sketchbook has to look like a story :S
