The doctors haven't been a whole lot of help yet so I'd appreciate any good guesses from those of you out there who've experienced similar pain. I have bilateral pain on my ischial tuberosity (boney part of buttocks) when sitting, hip pain, sharp lower back pain left of center (maybe S1/L5), hamstring sensitivity when sitting, and on & off again pain on the bottom of my right foot between the arch and my pinky toe when walking. I'm an athletic 40 year old with mild hip and SI joint OA according to the 10 or so x-rays I just had, but can't link this pain to an injury and haven't worked out much since summer. I also don't experience any increase in stiffness or pain in the morning versus throughout the day. This all came on kinda by itself but did occur after about 3 weeks of sleeping in an almost upright sitting position with legs up on a pillow due to a urinary tract infection that included all the usual symptoms as well as horrible lower left back pain (maybe kidney/urethra but didn't feel like typical muscle or nerve back pain). CT scan didn't show any urinary tract/bowl disorders. The blood work from the rhuemy came back all in the normal range. Other than this current problem I feel very healthy, however this pain and lack of normal mobility is really starting to get me down and anxious, so any good guesses as to what this might be are greatly appreciated.

Hi there!

I am a newbie as well. When you described your pain it was similar to mine. I am no doc that for sure but maybe you need a MRI done. Sound like a bulged disc or something pinching a nerve. Ask your GP to get one done then take it to a good ortho. I have been around and around since May of 2007 with my problems (check my posts) and now found a good ortho surgen in NY. But now I have to have a major surgery and that part stinks but to feel better I know I have to have this done. Don't put it off or be jerked around by doctors either because your situation could get worse than it is now.

I agree, you should get an MRI so that you can find out more about tissie damage. Regular x-rays don't show everyhing.

Also, you may want to research piriformis syndrome.

I hope you find out what it is soon..or even better, I hope it just goes away soon!

I also agree that you should probably try to get an MRI done. Trust me, the x-rays can show mild problems with bones, but one can still have very serious other issues in the spine going on. I've had a few x-rays done on my ankle and my spine. The ankle showed normal and my spine showed mild degeneration and mild scoliosis. None of that explained my severe pains and rapidly deteriorating condition. I finally had MRI's done and it was found I had some severe issues. I had severely torn tendons in my ankle, a collapsed inverted ankle, and osteochondral lesions on my talus, so now finally I got treatment and have to wear this big stiff brace that goes 1/3 up my leg, but it sure helps with the pain. And with my spine, I had 2 very large disc herniations (one being torn), 2 bulges, DDD, spondylosis, and severe central canal stensosis. Mind you, I didnt like that fact I had all this, but it was elating to know that i actually had some diagnoses. Especially with my ankle, since that had gone on for about 18 years!!!

Of course this isnt to say you would necessarily have serious issues going on, but it just shows that x-rays dont necessarily show much. I think you should really request an MRI or even find another doctor for another opinion.

Thank you very much for your responses, I'm glad to here that for the most part you all have been able to be diagnosed if not on the road to recovery. I just had an MRI two days ago and delivered the film to my orthor-spine doc's office for an appointment this coming wednesday. But now for the last week or so I've also been getting full back aches from shoulders down to lower back while sleeping...this can't be a good thing. But I walked about 1 mile yesterday and that was all I could take (3 months ago I could rollerblade 5 miles easily), but it felt good that I got the exercise. I broke my leg a few years ago and learned to believe in physical therapy and exercise for recovery...I just hope this is one those things that can be healed/repaired and not a life long problem. Thanks again for your replies:)
