starting? When I turn the key it just makes a click, when I keep trying it tries and then the starter kicks in, this afternoon after the car had been standing for over 4 hours the battery was very hot, could it be the solenoid playing up.

Sounds like a possible starter. Many shops will check them for free. Have it tested. If it is close to 5 years old it is probably due for changing anyway.

There could be several things that cause this, first check to make sure that all the connections from the battery to the starter are clean and tight. Often over time corrosion forms between the connections making starting difficult.
If these all check out to be OK then the most likely reason for the problem is that the starter motor is on its way out. You could get a replacement from a scrap yard but given that its a bit of a pig of a job to do, my advice would be to get a tested service exchange unit.
Ja.

The click is the solenoid but the starter is not turning the engine.
Could be loose battery connection or faulty battery (hot).
Could be faulty starter or loose wire at the starter. I'd check wiring and battery connecetion first. Fluid level could be low in battery too or dead cell.
