Any Direct IMAP/Exchange client for S^3?

Hi Guys,

I'm in line for a silver/white N8 - and I can hardly wait! Everything I've seen and heard about this device to date makes me drool. :p

Until today. I went to try out a few things on the device via the Nokia Remote Device Access site, including setting up a new email account. I happen to host my own IMAP mail server, and had added a "test" account that I used for this purpose. What I found was a little disconcerting.

According to my IMAP server log, the IMAP connection did not originate from the phone itself, but from the Nokia Messaging proxy:

Code:
Oct 19 23:53:25 core cyrus/imap[7886]: login: [b]em.outgoing4.messaging.nokia.com[/b] [67.220.123.24] test PLAIN+TLS User logged in

Does this mean that the only built-in email client on this puppy is using the NM third party service? If so, this is definitely a step backwards with regards to both security (man in the middle) and reliability (NM does not exactly have a stellar track record).

Are there other email solutions for Symbian^3 that (a) support both IMAP and Exchange, and (b) allows direct connections to the server(s)?

RoadSync might be an option for Exchange. For IMAP, it seems the only option out there is ProfiMail - but I'm not considering this one because it does not integrate very well with the OS.

Great question.

I also intend to use purely IMAP-based email for all the accounts I care to check on my phone, and I'd HATE to have it go through Nokia's servers!

Eager to hear people's suggestions.

As to comparisons, how do Android and iOS do their IMAP - through this kind of a 'proxy' or directly, from first principles?

Mail for Exchange (MfE) should connect directly to the exchange server... On the N97 when you set up a new email account, if you cancel the mail "wizard" you can manually set up a direct POP or IMAP account, not sure if that still works on the N8...

Well on the N8, MfE setup is a bit different; it seems to go through the same interface as personal IMAP accounts. As such I think it may be using NM too.

BTW, on the N97, the standard email wizard may or may not allow you to set up a personal email account at all, depending on whether you have the Nokia Messaging installer (.sisx) still on in your C:\installs folder (you'll need a 3rd party file manager to see it). In any case, it is more straightforward to use the "Sync Email Setup" -- it will allow you to specify POP3/IMAP accounts in addition to SyncML, without going through the NM crap.
