to dismiss the pre-European period? I was talking to an American tourist here in Europe yesterday and they refered to US history as beginning with the founding of Jamestown; I said well hey I thought there were Pueblo Indian dwellings in the South West dating back milenia, and she looked at me as if I were a member of a strange cult that was hassling her for a donation...as if to say 'oh you're one of those, aren't you!'. Yet I was only pointing out US history dates back to when the Indians emigrated during the last Ice Age. So is it not true that North American culture and history dates back to then and not to when Europeans came?
Yes it is true, the Spanish were in Florida, the Mid West and the South West well before the English. The French and Spanish were fighting in Florida 60 years before the Mayflower.
