I'm 25. I have a wife and a three month old daughter. I've worked for the last five years as an aircraft mechanic (A&P). I saw the writing on the economic wall last year and put myself through the police academy to increase my job prospects.
I've now been laid off from my aviation job, and have had no luck with law enforcement either. California is drowning in debt, and one way or another, I'm probably going to have to leave.
So my wife and I have been talking seriously about the military. I'm sure I will do good on the asvab. I blew away the practice test at the Navy recruiter office. He started pitching me the nuclear program.
I guess my question is.....What are the advantages/disadvantages of joining the military at an older age? What branch is best for families? If I were single, I'd go Navy just because ships interest me. But what I want now is whats best for my wife and daughter. Good housing / amenities etc.
Also, what would be a good rate/ mos for an intelligent, albiet degreeless person? I'm not job locked. In fact I'm very open. I just want to be challenged. I don't want to wind up peeling potatoes for 4 years.
