Anxiety at Work

I get very anxious when I'm at work lately. I feel like it's better if I'm at home so I can just relax and try to get through panicks, but at work, I'm there in front of everyone and don't want to seem awkward.

I work in a downtown location. I'm in a tourist-y city and am not in a bad area (I'm in San Antonio, TX) yet there are still many people who approach me. If I walk near a bus stop (I avoid them as much as possible), men will make comments to me and some people stand around and start to walk closer to me as I pass. I'm constantly asked if I have money to spare and get asked random questions. It really weirRAB me out! I joined a nearby gym just a couple blocks away and hate to walk there because of it. I also walk several blocks to where I park to save money by not using the parking garage ($6 a month vs. $90 a month). I don't go anywhere where I'm completely alone and don't go there when it's dark. Sometimes I walk around the Riverwalk area we have and some sidewalks are open to the water. I am so scared I will trip and fall into the water! I will wait for everybody to pass so I can walk on the opposite side.

I feel like my surroundings make me nervous ALL day, not just at the moment. If someone is walking behind me, I stop and less them pass because I don't like people where I can't see them. I don't care for people I don't know walking anywhere near me and feel like everybody walks towarRAB me and gets too close. I hate the elevators because I don't like to feel crammed in the corner. I haven't had anything bad happen, but I still get very worried all the time. One time I was telling my fiance about how people walk very close to me and he thought maybe I was just imaging it. I started carrying my gym bag on the side that is close to people and several of them walked right into it! That proved my point and I don't know why people would do that when there is plenty of room.

I don't like to be anxious at work! I feel like it makes me look bad and then I get distracted. I just want to be able to relax so I can do a good job. Then I feel anxious when I'm at home. I've been trying to find alternate ways to walk to work and to my gym so I can avoid all bus stops and common areas where people collect.

I took meRAB for anxiety/depression in the past and they just made me feel too out of it. I did feel more relaxed, but I felt drunk too. I had no energy! I've discovered that working out makes me feel great. I go out and work out during my lunch break sometimes and then in the evenings when I don't go at lunch. It helps!

Does anyone else have any good tips that may help? I also try to read a good book when I have a chance so I will relax. I'm naturally an anxious person and accept that and don't mind if I always have a challenge with it, but I just don't want it to affect my life too much. The positives about my anxiety are that I'm always aware of what is going on (and probably will be safer as a result of paying attention), I don't like to sit still and will get plenty of things done in a day, and my worrying makes me a determined person and makes me work hard to achieve my goals. I hate that my surroundings bother me so much! If I really can't beat them, I'll probably go for the parking garage and pay more (might be too hot to walk outside soon anyway), but first I'd like to try my best on my own.

There are a lot of ways to help your anxiety. Develop a more positive outlook. Exercise-- it will calm your brain down. Eat healthy. Take magnesium (can't personally vouch for this one but a lot of people recommend it). I would look up natural remedies for anxiety...there are a lot of ways to help if you don't want to use medication, but a lot of it has to do with adjusting the way you look at things.

Thanks for your reply! I guess I didn't mention to much that I'm a big of a health nut, in a very good way. I get a pretty clean diet and eat tons of fruits and veggies and natural fooRAB and cut out many processed fooRAB out of my diet. As a result, I feel better and my body looks way better. I work out a lot and find that it's the #1 thing that helps my anxiety. I actually used to panic if I couldn't work out one day due to injury or whatever cause. I run and lift weights and make sure to do so at a vigorous level, so it really calms me down and tires me out so I'm less likely to worry. I guess I am doing the right thing and will just keep it up! As for work, I'll just try my best to stay calm, but I just feel there is only so much I can do due to my surroundings.
